FTC Warns Coin Master Players Over Mobile Wallet Phishing Scams

Mobile gamers are facing a costly new financial threat. The Federal Trade Commission has issued an urgent warning regarding a highly sophisticated phishing campaign targeting players of the hit mobile game Coin Master. Scammers are exploiting the game’s core mechanic—spinning a virtual slot machine—to trick unsuspecting victims into handing over access to their digital payment accounts.

For the uninitiated, Coin Master is a global juggernaut. Developed by Moon Active, the game has been downloaded over 100 million times. Players spend their time building virtual villages, raiding rivals, and spinning a digital slot machine for rewards. Spins are the absolute lifeblood of the game. When a player runs out, they must either wait hours for a refill or spend real money. This constant demand for resources has created a goldmine for fraudsters.

How the ‘Free Spin’ Trap Works

According to federal regulators, the scam usually begins on social media. Fraudsters post highly convincing advertisements or direct messages on platforms like TikTok, Discord, and Facebook, promising massive bundles of up to 10,000 “free spins.” These posts almost always contain a link to an external website.

Once a player clicks the link, they are taken to a spoofed web page designed to look exactly like an official Moon Active promotion. To claim the promised reward, the site asks the user to “verify” their age or identity. This is where the trap snaps shut. Players are prompted to link their mobile wallets, including Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, or Venmo, supposedly to authorize a tiny, temporary transaction fee of just a few cents.

It takes only a single tap. Once the user authorizes the connection or inputs their login credentials into the fake portal, the scammers gain full access. Within minutes, the victims’ linked bank accounts and credit cards are systematically drained.

The Evolution of Mobile Phishing

The sheer sophistication of these schemes has caught many veteran gamers off guard. Phishing attacks used to be easy to spot. They were often riddled with obvious spelling errors, broken English, and clunky layouts. Today, bad actors are using high-resolution assets stolen directly from the official game. The spoofed sites look flawless.

Furthermore, scammers leverage psychological tricks. They create a false sense of urgency, displaying countdown timers that claim the free spin offer will expire in minutes. Under pressure, players are far more likely to overlook red flags and authorize the malicious wallet connections.

How to Protect Your Wallet

The federal government is urging mobile users to exercise extreme caution. Regulators point out that legitimate companies will never demand mobile wallet authentication or login credentials to distribute promotional rewards. If an offer asks you to link a payment method to receive a free in-game item, it is almost certainly a scam.

To keep your personal data and finances safe, security experts recommend several key practices:

  • Only trust links from verified social media accounts that feature a blue checkmark.
  • Never enter your bank or mobile wallet credentials on third-party websites.
  • Enable two-factor authentication on all your financial apps to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Avoid downloading third-party keyboard apps or configuration profiles, which can log your keystrokes.

Moon Active has previously reminded its community that official free rewards are only distributed through their verified channels and will never require payment verification. If you believe your mobile wallet has been compromised, contact your financial institution immediately to freeze your accounts. You should also report the fraudulent activity to the government at the official FTC fraud reporting website.
