Fortnitemares 2026 to Feature Disney Universe Playable Preview
The Metaverse Lands in Fortnite
Epic Games is turning its annual Halloween bash into a massive staging ground for the future of entertainment. This year’s Fortnitemares event, set to kick off in mid-October 2026, will feature something far bigger than the usual spooky skins and pumpkin launchers. For the first time, players can step directly into a live, playable preview of the highly anticipated Disney persistent universe.
The collaboration stems from Disney’s massive $1.5 billion investment in Epic Games back in early 2024. Since then, fans have wondered when they would finally see the fruits of this partnership. Now, we have an answer. The upcoming seasonal event will serve as a soft launchpad for this sprawling digital world, blending the eerie vibes of Fortnitemares with the magic of Disney’s deepest vaults.
Step Inside “The Distortion”
According to Epic’s announcement, the preview will take place in a newly manifested map region called The Distortion. It is a shadowy, fractured zone where classic Disney worlds collide with Fortnite’s chaotic Battle Royale island. Players who enter this rift will find themselves in a highly interactive space that goes beyond simple combat.
“We wanted to give players more than just a cinematic teaser,” says Epic Games Executive Vice President Saxs Persson. “This is a real, hands-on slice of what we have been building with Disney. You will get to experience the physics, the art style, and the sheer scale of this new universe right inside the Fortnite client.”
In The Distortion, the gameplay shifts. While you can still defend yourself, the focus turns toward exploration and puzzle-solving. Epic has built new traversal mechanics specifically for this zone, allowing players to glide through the air on magical trails or use telekinetic abilities inspired by various Disney franchises. Classic characters like Maleficent and Hades will make appearances, not just as cosmetic store items, but as fully voiced NPCs who offer unique quests and lore drops.

Spooky Loot and Classic Chaos
Completing these challenges will unlock a fresh batch of crossover cosmetics. Epic confirmed that players can earn a Shadow Mickey back bling and a weapon wrap inspired by The Nightmare Before Christmas. For those willing to spend V-Bucks, the item shop will feature new outfits, including Cruella de Vil and a ghostly, neon-tinted version of Captain Hook.
Of course, it would not be Fortnitemares without the traditional Halloween chaos. Outside of the Disney zone, the rest of the island will undergo its yearly transformation. The sky will turn a permanent twilight purple, and fog will roll across the fields. Epic is unvaulting fan-favorite weapons, including:
- The classic Pumpkin Launcher
- The fast-travel Witch Brooms
- The high-damage Wood Stake Shotgun
Players can also expect the return of Horde Rush, the cooperative PvE mode where teams fight off waves of Cube Monsters. This year’s Horde Rush features a twist: Disney-themed mini-bosses will occasionally invade the arenas, pushing squads to adapt their strategies on the fly.
A Major Test for Both Giants
This event marks a crucial moment for both corporate giants. For Disney, it is a major test of whether their multi-billion-dollar bet on the metaverse will resonate with younger, highly active gamers. For Epic, it proves that Fortnite is no longer just a battle royale game, but a robust operating system for virtual worlds.
The persistent universe project is built entirely on Unreal Engine 5. It aims to let users play, watch, shop, and create their own experiences using assets from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and Avatar. While the full, standalone platform is not expected to launch until late 2027, this October preview will offer the most concrete look yet at how these massive IPs will live together under one digital roof.
Fortnitemares 2026 is scheduled to go live on Tuesday, October 13, following a brief downtime for patch 36.10. The event, along with the Disney universe preview, will run through November 3.
