Epic Games Blocks Fortnite Lobby Difficulty Stats

Fortnite players looking to check the skill level of their opponents are out of luck. In a sudden move, Epic Games has modified its public Application Programming Interface (API), blocking third-party websites from pulling real-time matchmaking data. The unannounced update has effectively killed one of the most popular features on Fortnite Tracker: the live lobby difficulty rating.

For years, Tracker Network’s dedicated Fortnite portal allowed users to look up their match history and analyze the active lobbies they were placed in. The site calculated a lobby difficulty rating by averaging the stats of every player in a given match. This let users know whether they had just won a highly competitive game or simply dominated a lobby filled with computer-controlled bots. Now, that feature is entirely gone.

Why the Change Happened

Epic Games did not issue a major public statement ahead of the API tweak. However, the developer has historically tightened its data sharing policies to protect player privacy. By hiding matchmaking details, Epic prevents third parties from scraping user profiles without explicit consent. It also keeps the inner workings of its skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) system under wraps.

While privacy is a valid concern, the timing and execution of the update caught the community off guard. Third-party developers woke up to find their tools broken overnight. Without access to individual player IDs during active match matchmaking, calculating any sort of live lobby metric became impossible. The Tracker Network team quickly confirmed the issue, noting they could no longer fetch the data required to keep the feature running.

A Blow to Content Creators

The reaction from the Fortnite community was swift and largely negative. Casual players often used these metrics to understand why their games suddenly felt much harder. On the other end of the spectrum, competitive players and content creators relied on lobby tracking for credibility.

In the world of online streaming, accusations of bot lobby farming are common. Top-tier creators frequently face claims that they only secure high-kill games because they play against weaker opponents or AI. Being able to link to a Fortnite Tracker page proving a lobby was in the top tier of difficulty was a shield against these accusations. Without this data, creators have lost a vital tool to verify their skills.

Get Know Instant Access

Checking lobby stats after a crazy win to see how many high-tier players were in the game was half the fun for dedicated players. Now, they are completely in the dark, unable to prove the caliber of their opponents.

What Remains on Fortnite Tracker?

The API changes do not mean Fortnite Tracker is completely dead. Players can still log on to view their personal lifetime statistics, including their overall win ratios, kill-death spreads, and match histories. Individual profile tracking remains functional, provided the player’s account settings are set to public.

What has vanished is the broader context. You can see your own performance, but you can no longer see who you performed against. The loss of match-by-match lobby averages makes it much harder to track changes in Epic’s matchmaking algorithm over time.

The Growing Divide

This is not the first time a major game developer has locked down its data. Over the past few years, companies behind competitive shooters have repeatedly altered their APIs. Often, these decisions are framed as security measures to curb toxicity, cheating, and doxxing. Yet, the collateral damage is almost always the community-built databases that keep players engaged.

For now, Tracker Network has acknowledged the limitation on its platform. The site has removed the lobby difficulty widget from its dashboard, marking the end of an era for Fortnite stat-heads. Whether Epic Games will offer a compromised, privacy-first alternative for developers remains to be seen, but history suggests they are unlikely to walk this decision back.
