Fortnite Fans Demand Return of Classic Item Shop UI

The Sept 30 Redesign Sparks Immediate Player Outrage

Fortnite players are angry. Again. This time, the outrage isn’t over a powerful weapon or a controversial gameplay tweak. Instead, the community is united in its hatred for a menu.

Epic Games pushed out a fresh update on September 30, bringing a brand-new user interface to the game’s virtual Item Shop. The developers designed the overhaul to modernize the browsing experience. Instead, it has sparked an immediate, aggressive backlash. Social media platforms like Reddit and X are flooded with complaints, and the message from fans is loud and clear: give us back the classic grid.

The Death of Simplicity

For years, the Fortnite Item Shop was simple. It featured a clean, blocky layout that let players see exactly what was on sale at a single glance. It was intuitive. You scrolled down, saw the skins, the gliders, the emotes, and you made your choice.

The new design throws that simplicity out the window. It opts for a more horizontal, streaming-service-style look that reminds many of Netflix or Disney+. Items are grouped into flowing rows with rounded corners, oversized preview cards, and different scaling sizes.

To Epic, this might look like a sleek, modern upgrade. To players, it is a chaotic mess.

“It is incredibly frustrating to navigate now,” one Reddit user wrote in a thread that quickly gathered thousands of upvotes. “Everything is huge, but somehow you see less on the screen at one time. Why do they keep fixing things that aren’t broken?”

Navigation Nightmares and Sluggish Performance

That sentiment is echoing across the entire community. Players complain that the new setup makes browsing feel like a chore. It requires far too much scrolling to find specific items, and the scaling makes some featured bundles look disproportionately massive while hiding individual cosmetics. On mobile devices and consoles, users report sluggish navigation and delayed loading times as the system struggles to render the heavy layout.

Get Know Instant Access

This isn’t an isolated incident, either. Over the past year, Epic Games has embarked on a crusade to redesign almost every menu in Fortnite. The push started with the main lobby screen, moved to the controversial Locker UI update in Chapter 5, and has now claimed the Item Shop.

Each of these changes has met with varying degrees of resistance. The Locker update, in particular, was so universally disliked that Epic publicly promised to make adjustments, though many players feel those fixes didn’t go far enough. The new Item Shop layout feels like the final straw for a fan base tired of constant, unnecessary changes.

“They are trying to turn the game into a generic corporate launcher,” said another fan on X. “They want everything to look like Roblox or a smart TV app. It’s losing the unique Fortnite identity.”

What Lies Behind Epic’s Menu Overhauls?

What frustrates players most is the apparent lack of communication. While Epic is usually quick to patch bugs that affect gameplay, UI complaints often get pushed to the back burner. The developers have positioned Fortnite as a “metaverse” platform, housing Lego Fortnite, Rocket Racing, and Fortnite Festival alongside the core Battle Royale mode. This grand vision explains why the menus are changing—Epic wants a unified interface that accommodates all these different experiences. But for the average player who just wants to log in, buy a skin, and play a match, the unified UI feels bloated and unnecessary.

As the backlash grows, some content creators and community leaders are joining the chorus, asking Epic to at least provide a toggle option. Letting players choose between the classic grid view and the new layout seems like an easy compromise.

So far, Epic Games has not officially responded to the criticism surrounding the September 30 update. Historically, the developer rarely reverts a UI change completely, preferring to tweak and polish the new system over several patches. But with player sentiment hitting a new low, Epic might have to make a tough decision. Until then, Fortnite fans will have to squint through the clutter just to spend their V-Bucks.
