Fortnite IT Crossover and New UEFN PvE Mode Set for Fortnitemares 2026
Pennywise is Finally Coming to the Island
It is official. After years of whispered rumors, teased files, and hopeful fan concepts, Epic Games has confirmed that Stephen King’s IT is invading the battle royale map for Fortnitemares 2026. The ancient, shape-shifting entity is bringing his signature red balloons, creepy laughs, and plenty of jump scares to the game.
Starting next week, players will notice unsettling changes across the island. Epic revealed that drainage grates near major towns will feature single, floating red balloons. Get too close, and you might hear a faint, echoing chuckle. It is a brilliant, slow-burn setup for what promises to be the spookiest event in Fortnite history.
A New Era of PvE: Escape from Derry
But the crossover cosmetics are only half the story. Epic is using Fortnitemares 2026 to showcase the incredible power of its creative tools. For the first time, the flagship PvE mode has been built entirely within Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). It is called Escape from Derry.
This is not your typical, run-of-the-mill horde rush. Escape from Derry is a highly atmospheric, four-player cooperative survival mode. Players are dropped into the pitch-black sewers beneath Derry, Maine. The goal is simple: escape. Doing so, however, is a nightmare.

Epic says they used UEFN to push visual and mechanical boundaries. The mode features dynamic volumetric fog, spatial audio that mimics drips and distant scraping, and a custom sanity meter. If your sanity drops too low, you will start hallucinating fake threats. Flashlights drain quickly, forcing squads to coordinate who lights the path and who watches the rear. It feels less like Fortnite and more like a dedicated survival horror game.
The Rewards and Cosmetics
Of course, it would not be a Fortnite event without plenty of loot. The Item Shop is getting a massive injection of horror-themed items. According to early leaks, some of these cosmetics have been in development for years.
- The Pennywise Outfit: This highly detailed skin features two distinct styles—the classic 1990 miniseries look and the modern 2017 cinematic version. It also comes with a built-in Dancing Clown emote.
- S.S. Georgie Glider: A simple, folded paper boat that you ride down to the island.
- Red Balloon Back Bling: A single, bobbing balloon. Beware: it pops if you take shield damage.
- The Losers Club Bundle: Featuring skins inspired by the iconic kids from Derry, along with a unique Deadlights pickaxe.
Players can also unlock free rewards by playing the UEFN mode. Completing specific sewer quests will net you a custom weapon wrap, a sewer-grate loading screen, and a Pennywise spray.
When Does Fortnitemares 2026 Start?
You do not have to wait long to face your fears. Fortnitemares 2026 officially launches on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, following a brief downtime for the v34.10 update. The event is scheduled to run until November 3, giving players exactly three weeks to grab their gear, team up, and survive the sewers.
Epic is betting big on UEFN this year. By outsourcing their main seasonal mode to their own advanced editor, they are sending a clear message to independent creators: look at what is possible. If Escape from Derry succeeds, it could change how Epic delivers seasonal content forever. Get your squad ready. Just remember: down here, we all float.
