Costco Completes Nationwide Scanner Rollout Before Q4 Earnings

The End of the Honor System at the Warehouse Door

If you walked into a Costco this month, you probably noticed the change immediately. The days of simply waving your membership card at a busy employee rushing to count heads are gone. Now, you have to scan. Every single time.

By the end of September 2026, Costco officially completed its nationwide rollout of front-door membership scanners. What started as a limited test run earlier in the year is now standard operating procedure across all U.S. warehouses. If you want to get past the lobby, you must scan your physical card or the digital QR code on your phone. If your card does not have a photo, you will need to show a government-issued ID to match the name on the account. Guests are still welcome, but they must walk in alongside an active cardholder.

It is a massive shift in how the bulk-buy giant operates. It is also a move that is shaking up foot traffic patterns and forcing card-sharers to make a choice: buy a membership or shop somewhere else.

Why Costco is Tightening the Reins

Why the sudden change? It all comes down to the self-checkout lanes. When Costco expanded its self-checkout options over the last few years, executives noticed a growing loophole. Shoppers who were not members were slipping past the front door by blending into crowds, then using a friend’s or family member’s card at the self-checkout kiosks where employees rarely checked IDs.

To Costco, this is a direct threat to its business model. The warehouse retailer does not make most of its money from selling cheap hot dogs or bulk toilet paper. In fact, merchandise margins are razor-thin. The real cash cow is membership fees, which account for the vast majority of the company’s operating income. By allowing non-members to shop, Costco was essentially leaving millions of dollars on the table.

Friction at the Entrance

Unsurprisingly, the new policy has met some resistance. Social media platforms have been flooded with complaints about bottlenecks at the entrance, especially during peak weekend hours. Some shoppers have complained about lines snaking out into parking lots as customers fumble to find their physical cards or load the Costco app on their phones.

This friction has caused a slight, temporary dip in foot traffic in certain suburban locations. Some casual shoppers, annoyed by the extra hassle or unable to use shared accounts, have cut back on their visits. Yet, retail experts say this disruption is likely temporary. Once shoppers adapt to the routine, the lines should move just as quickly as they did under the old manual check system.

A Boost for Sign-Up Rates Ahead of Earnings

While foot traffic might feel a bit different right now, the policy appears to be doing exactly what Costco wanted: driving up sign-ups. Deprived of their easy access to the store, many previous card-sharers are finally buying their own accounts.

This surge in new memberships comes at a crucial time. Costco is preparing to release its Q4 earnings report, and Wall Street analysts are watching the numbers closely. The company recently raised its annual membership fees for the first time in seven years—bumping the basic Gold Star membership to $65 and the Executive tier to $130. Combined with the scanner rollout, these fee increases are expected to give a significant boost to Costco’s subscription revenue.

Early data suggests that the crackdown is working much like Netflix’s highly publicized password-sharing ban. While there was initial pushback, the streaming giant ultimately saw a massive wave of new sign-ups. Costco is betting on a similar trajectory.

What Lies Ahead

For the average shopper, the new scanners are simply something to get used to. Costco is unlikely to back down. The company has always fiercely protected its membership program, and this technological upgrade is the logical next step in its security evolution.

As the Q4 earnings report approaches, the retail world will get its first clear look at the financial impact of the scanners. If the revenue numbers justify the move, expect other membership-only warehouse clubs to follow Costco’s lead very quickly.
