Japanese iPhone users are about to get Fortnite back. Epic Games has officially confirmed it will launch its own digital storefront on iOS in Japan, paving the way for the hit battle royale game to return to Apple devices. This massive move is set for late 2025 or early 2026. Why now? It all comes down to a sweeping new law passed by the Japanese government.
A Blow to the Walled Garden
Japan’s parliament recently approved the Act on Promotion of Competition for Specified Smartphone Software. The legislation targets the mobile duopoly of Apple and Google directly. Under the new rules, tech giants cannot block developers from offering third-party app stores. They also cannot force creators to use their proprietary payment systems.
Breaking these rules will carry heavy fines. First-time violations can cost up to 20% of a company’s domestic revenue. If they keep doing it, that penalty can jump to 30%. It is a massive blow to Apple’s walled garden approach.
The Long Feud Comes to Japan
This legal shift is exactly what Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has been fighting for. Back in 2020, Apple kicked Fortnite off the App Store globally. Epic had bypassed Apple’s 30% cut on in-app purchases by introducing a direct payment option. That started a bitter, multi-year legal battle in the United States and beyond.
While Epic found mixed success in US courts, regulatory tides are turning globally. Europe’s Digital Markets Act already forced Apple to open iOS to third-party stores in the European Union earlier this year. Japan is now following a very similar path.
What the Launch Means for Gamers
The timing of Epic’s return hinges entirely on when the Japanese government begins enforcing the regulations. Analysts expect the law to take full effect within a year and a half of its promulgation, setting the stage for a late 2025 or early 2026 launch.
Epic Games expressed its excitement on social media, thanking Japanese lawmakers for pushing the bill through. “We look forward to bringing the Epic Games Store and Fortnite to iOS in Japan,” the company said. It represents a major victory for a market that has long been a powerhouse for mobile gaming.
For Japanese players, the news is a relief. Mobile gaming is huge in Japan. The sudden loss of Fortnite on iOS left millions of players stranded or forced to switch to consoles, PCs, or Android devices. Soon, they will be able to download the Epic Games Store directly onto their iPhones and jump back into the battle bus.
A Ripple Effect Across the Industry
But this is about more than just one game. The law will reshape the entire mobile ecosystem in Japan. Other developers are already watching closely.
