A New Era for Fortnite
Fortnite is about to change forever. Again.
Epic Games just pulled back the curtain on its highly anticipated collaboration with Disney, officially naming the project Disney Chronicle. Set to launch in October 2026, this expansion is shaping up to be far more than a typical gaming crossover. It is a massive, persistent virtual world where players can build their own lasting kingdoms, all powered by the newly revealed Unreal Engine 6.
This announcement marks the first major milestone since Disney poured $1.5 billion into Epic Games in early 2024. Back then, both companies promised a persistent universe that would live alongside Fortnite. Now, we finally know what that looks like.
Building Kingdoms That Last
The centerpiece of Disney Chronicle is its persistence. In standard Fortnite, everything you build is temporary. You build a wall, it gets blown up, and when the match ends, it vanishes. Not here.
In Disney Chronicle, players will get their own plots of land to design, construct, and manage permanent Disney-themed realms. Whether you want to build a futuristic Tomorrowland outpost, a cozy cottage in the Sherwood Forest, or a towering ice castle, your creations will stay exactly where you left them.
“We wanted to give players the keys to the kingdom—literally,” said Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney during the presentation. “This isn’t about playing through a pre-made Disney story. It’s about letting players write their own stories, build their own homes, and keep them forever.”
Powered by Unreal Engine 6
But running a persistent world of this scale requires serious horsepower. That is where Unreal Engine 6 comes in.
Epic is using Disney Chronicle as the primary showcase for its next-generation engine. Unreal Engine 6 aims to solve one of the biggest challenges in modern gaming: connecting millions of players in a single, seamless digital environment without melting servers. While Unreal Engine 5 focused on photorealistic lighting and high-fidelity geometry, the next iteration is all about scale and interoperability.
According to Epic’s technical team, the new engine allows players to move seamlessly between different virtual spaces—like jumping from a battle royale match straight into their personal Disney kingdom—without loading screens or jarring transitions. It also enables massive, shared public areas where thousands of players can gather at once for live events, shopping, or socialization.
A Deep Disney Catalog
Disney’s chief of experiences, Josh D’Amaro, joined Sweeney to highlight how this technology changes storytelling. “For decades, Disney has invited people into our worlds through movie screens and theme parks,” D’Amaro said. “Now, we are giving them a digital canvas where they can live inside those worlds, customize them, and interact with our characters in ways we could only dream of a few years ago.”
Players can expect to see characters and environments from Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and classic Walt Disney Animation. But unlike previous Fortnite events where these characters were just cosmetic skins, they will now act as permanent residents of the virtual world. You might run a virtual shop with Wreck-It Ralph, go on quests for Elsa, or defend your kingdom alongside the Avengers.
The social aspect is also getting a massive upgrade. Players can link their kingdoms together, creating sprawling, neighborhood-like communities. You can visit a friend’s realm, help them harvest resources, or trade custom-built items. The economy will be powered by a unified system, allowing creators to potentially monetize their custom Disney experiences within Epic’s ecosystem.
The road to October 2026 is still long, and Epic plans to run several closed alpha tests starting in late 2025 to test the limits of Unreal Engine 6. For now, the message is clear: Epic Games is no longer just making a battle royale game. They are building the foundation of a new digital society, and they have brought the world’s biggest entertainment brand along for the ride.
