Fortnite Unveils Persistent Star Wars Sector Chronicles of the Force
Fortnite is no longer just a battle royale game. We have known that for years. But now, it is getting a permanent galaxy far, far away.
Disney and Epic Games have officially unveiled "Chronicles of the Force," a massive, persistent Star Wars sector built directly inside the Fortnite ecosystem. This is not another temporary crossover event. It is not a limited-time mode that will vanish in two weeks. Instead, it is a permanent, evolving virtual space where players can live out their own galactic adventures.
The Fruits of a Billion-Dollar Partnership
The announcement comes roughly a year after Disney acquired a massive $1.5 billion equity stake in Epic Games. At the time, Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger called the move the company’s biggest entry ever into the gaming market. Now, we are seeing what that huge financial bet actually looks like.
"Chronicles of the Force" represents a fundamental shift in how the two entertainment giants collaborate. Rather than dropping occasional character skins into the item shop, Epic and Disney are building an ongoing digital world. The project utilizes Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) to merge Disney’s deep catalog of stories with Epic’s massive social gaming hub.
A Living, Breathing Star Wars Galaxy
When players jump into the new sector, they will land on a central hub world. From there, they can travel to legendary Star Wars locations. Epic has already confirmed that iconic spots like Tatooine’s dusty settlements, the dense forests of Endor, and a newly constructed Jedi Temple will be explorable at launch.
The gameplay goes far beyond simple combat. Players can choose distinct paths, taking on roles as Jedi trainees, elite bounty hunters, or rogue smugglers. Weekly faction missions will allow players to earn unique rewards and slowly shift the power dynamic of the sector. Some of the core features include:

- Persistent progression that carries over between gaming sessions.
- Custom spaceship piloting, featuring classic vessels like X-wings and TIE fighters.
- Deep lightsaber customization and advanced combat mechanics.
- Dynamic world events that react to the community’s collective choices.
Saxs Persson, Executive Vice President of Epic’s Fortnite Ecosystem, believes this project redefines virtual spaces. "We wanted to move way past the idea of just wearing a character skin," Persson explained. "We want players to actually live in these spaces. If someone wants to spend their entire evening running a cantina on Tatooine, socializing with friends, we want to give them the tools to do exactly that."
Giving the Keys to the Community
Perhaps the most ambitious part of the project is the integration of user-generated content. Epic plans to release a massive suite of official Star Wars development assets to the public. This means independent creators can design their own space stations, write custom missions, and build unique competitive arenas using official Lucasfilm models and sounds.
Lucasfilm is closely supervising the project to make sure everything stays true to the spirit of the franchise. Dave Filoni, Chief Creative Officer at Lucasfilm, shared his excitement about the platform’s storytelling potential.
"Star Wars has always been about a shared universe," Filoni said. "With Chronicles of the Force, we are giving fans a massive digital sandbox. They aren’t just watching our stories anymore. They are creating their own alongside millions of other players. It is an incredibly exciting step forward for us."
Launch Details and Beyond
Epic Games confirmed that the open beta for "Chronicles of the Force" is scheduled to launch in April 2025. The experience will be free to access for anyone who has Fortnite downloaded.
As expected, the game will feature various premium tie-ins, including exclusive cosmetic battle passes and unique ship designs. However, Epic stressed that the core gameplay, story missions, and creative building tools will remain free for all players. The galaxy is expanding, and everyone is invited to join.
