Fortnite to Return to iPhones in Japan After Antitrust Ruling

Fortnite is making a comeback on Japanese iPhones. Epic Games confirmed it will launch its popular battle royale title, along with its standalone mobile marketplace, on iOS devices in Japan. The move follows the passage of a landmark antitrust law designed to break Apple and Google’s duopoly over smartphone software ecosystems.

For years, Japanese iPhone users had no official way to play Fortnite on the go. Apple booted the game from the App Store in 2020 during a bitter global legal dispute over payment systems. Now, regulatory pressure is forcing the tech giant’s hand, opening up a closed ecosystem to outside competition.

Japan’s New Tech Regulations

In June 2024, Japan’s parliament passed the Act on Promotion of Competition for Specified Smartphone Software. This legislation takes direct aim at app store monopolies. It forbids dominant platform operators from blocking third-party app stores and alternative payment methods. Under the new rules, companies like Apple and Google must allow fair competition on their platforms.

The penalties for breaking the law are severe. Regulators can hit non-compliant tech giants with fines reaching up to 20 percent of their domestic revenue from the offending service. For repeat offenses, that penalty can rise to 30 percent. This creates a powerful incentive for Apple to cooperate. The law is scheduled to take full effect by late 2025.

Epic Games Seizes the Opportunity

Epic Games did not waste any time. Almost immediately after the legislative progress in Japan, the developer announced its intention to bring the Epic Games Store to Japanese iOS devices. Players will soon be able to install the store directly on their iPhones and download Fortnite without going through Apple’s official App Store.

“We are excited to bring our store and Fortnite back to iOS in Japan,” the company stated in a brief announcement. The developer has long championed open platforms, arguing that Apple’s 30 percent cut of digital transactions hurts both creators and consumers. Japan’s regulatory pivot represents a major victory in Epic’s multi-year campaign.

An Echo of the European Union’s Strategy

This expansion mirrors Epic’s strategy in Europe. Earlier, the European Union implemented the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which forced Apple to allow alternative app marketplaces on iOS within the 27-member bloc. As a result, Epic launched its dedicated iOS app store in the EU, bringing Fortnite back to European iPhones after a four-year absence.

But the rollout has not been entirely smooth. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has repeatedly criticized Apple’s implementation of these regulatory changes. In Europe, Apple introduced new fees, including a “Core Technology Fee” of 0.50 Euros per annual install after a certain threshold. Epic has called these fees anticompetitive and designed to discourage developers from leaving the official App Store. It remains to be seen whether Apple will try to introduce similar fees in Japan, or how Japanese regulators will react if they do.

What Lies Ahead for Japanese Gamers

Japanese players have a lot to look forward to. Japan is one of the world’s most lucrative mobile gaming markets, and Fortnite has a dedicated local fan base. While players can currently stream the game via cloud services, a native app offers a far better experience with lower latency and smoother performance.

Epic has not announced a specific release date yet, but the launch is tied directly to when the Japanese antitrust law goes into effect. Industry analysts expect the Epic Games Store to arrive on Japanese iPhones in late 2025. Between the EU’s DMA, Japan’s new law, and ongoing scrutiny in other regions like the United Kingdom and the United States, the wall around Apple’s walled garden is starting to crumble. Epic is ready to step through the cracks.
