Fortnite Returns to UK iPhones via Epic Games Store

It is official. Fortnite is making its way back to iPhones in the United Kingdom.

The battle royale hit was banished from iOS devices nearly four years ago. Now, a new piece of British legislation is forcing Apple’s hand. The comeback is a direct result of the UK’s newly enacted Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers (DMCC) Act, which aims to break the stranglehold tech giants have over their digital ecosystems.

A Long-Awaited Return

For British iPhone owners, this marks the end of a long exile. Apple kicked Fortnite off its platform back in 2020. The drama started when Epic Games tried to bypass Apple’s mandatory 30% cut on in-app purchases by introducing its own direct payment system. Apple reacted swiftly, pulling the game from the App Store and triggering a global legal war.

For years, Epic argued that Apple’s strict control over iOS stifled competition and hurt developers. Now, governments are starting to agree. The DMCC Act gives the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) the power to designate companies like Apple as having ‘strategic market status.’ Once labeled, these firms must open their platforms to rivals, allowing alternative app marketplaces and third-party payment systems on iOS.

How the DMCC Changed the Rules

Epic Games was quick to seize the opportunity. The developer confirmed plans to launch the Epic Games Store on iOS in the UK. This digital storefront will serve as the exclusive home for Fortnite on Apple devices in the region.

‘We are going ahead with our plans to bring the Epic Games Store and Fortnite back to iOS in the UK,’ Epic Games said in an official statement, calling the legislative shift a massive win for choice and competition.

The move mirrors Epic’s strategy in the European Union, where the Digital Markets Act (DMA) forced Apple to open its ecosystem earlier this year. However, the European rollout has been anything but smooth. Epic and Apple have continued to clash over the installation process, security warnings, and the controversial fees Apple still charges developers who opt out of the App Store.

What This Means for British Players

British users can expect a similar setup to their European counterparts. To play Fortnite on an iPhone, they will likely need to download the Epic Games Store directly from Epic’s website. This process involves navigating through several system warnings that Apple insists are necessary for user safety. Epic, on the other hand, calls these warnings ‘scare screens’ designed to deter users.

Tim Sweeney, Epic’s outspoken CEO, has been championing this cause globally. He has repeatedly criticized Apple’s ‘Core Technology Fee’ in Europe, calling it an anticompetitive tax. Whether Apple will attempt to introduce a similar fee structure in the UK remains a point of intense speculation.

A Crumbling Walled Garden

Despite the friction, the return of Fortnite represents a major shift in the mobile ecosystem. For over a decade, iOS was a strictly controlled walled garden. Developers had to play by Apple’s rules or find another platform. Now, that garden wall is crumbling, piece by piece, country by country.

The CMA has made it clear that it will closely monitor how tech companies comply with the new rules. If Apple tries to make it too difficult for third-party stores to operate in the UK, it could face massive fines of up to 10% of its global annual revenue. For gamers, the mechanics matter less than the outcome. Soon, they will be able to drop back into the Island from their iPhones during their morning commute.
