Fortnite Gift Cards Switch to Paper in North America
Fortnite is known for its constantly shifting digital world, but its latest major update is happening in the physical retail space. Epic Games is quietly phasing out its traditional plastic gift cards. In their place, shoppers across North America will soon find 100% recyclable, paper-only alternatives on store shelves.
The transition is already rolling out at major retailers in the United States and Canada, including Walmart, Target, GameStop, and Best Buy. Epic is pushing to have the new paper formats fully established before the high-volume fourth-quarter holiday shopping rush begins. It is a massive logistical shift, considering how popular these physical cards are during the winter holidays.
Ditching Plastic for Certified Paper
For over a decade, gift card racks have been dominated by heavy polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic. They are tough, but they are also terrible for the environment. Most of these cards are tossed into the trash minutes after they are redeemed, ending up in landfills where they take centuries to decompose. Epic’s new cards tackle this environmental issue head-on by utilizing Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper. Even the ink and the scratch-off security backing have been redesigned to ensure the entire card can go straight into the recycling bin.
The move aligns with a broader push toward corporate sustainability. While digital gift cards are more popular than ever, physical cards remain a crucial entry point for younger players. Many kids do not have access to debit cards or digital wallets, making physical V-Bucks cards the easiest way for them to buy in-game cosmetics, emotes, and battle passes.

Same Code, Greener Packaging
Gamers will not notice any difference in how the cards work. The redemption process remains identical. Each card still features a secure PIN hidden under a scratch-off layer, which players input on Epic’s website to credit their accounts. The only real difference is tactile. The new cards feel more like premium, heavy-weight playing cards rather than stiff credit cards.
Retailers will not have to change how they handle these items either. The paper cards are designed to work perfectly with existing point-of-sale barcode scanners and activation systems. This prevents any checkout delays, which is a major priority for stores preparing for the chaotic holiday shopping season.
What Happens to Existing Plastic Cards?
There is no need to worry if you have an unredeemed plastic card sitting in a drawer at home. Epic has confirmed that all existing plastic Fortnite cards will remain valid and can still be redeemed at any time. Retailers are not throwing away their current stock; they will simply sell through their remaining plastic cards while restocking shelves with the new paper versions. Over the next month, shoppers will likely see a mix of both styles on store racks.
Leading the Industry Trend
Epic’s decision to overhaul its retail footprint ahead of Q4 is a calculated business move that also scores environmental points. The final three months of the year represent the peak of the gaming retail market. By making the swap now, Epic prevents millions of pieces of single-use plastic from being manufactured and discarded during the holiday rush.
While some other major gaming publishers have run limited trials with eco-friendly packaging, Epic’s continental rollout is one of the most aggressive steps toward green retail in the gaming industry. Because Fortnite remains one of the most played games on earth, this change will have a highly visible impact. It sets a new standard for the industry, potentially forcing competitors to rethink their own plastic footprints.
