Epic Games Privacy Update Cripples Fortnite Tracker

For nearly a decade, Fortnite Tracker has been the lifeblood of the game’s competitive community. Whether you wanted to brag about your win-rate, scout a rival’s landing spot, or track your rise up the regional leaderboards, the site was an essential daily stop. That era might be over.

With the rollout of Fortnite Chapter 7, Epic Games introduced a sweeping API privacy overhaul. The change has caught third-party analytics platforms completely off guard. By tightening restrictions on what player data is publicly accessible, Epic has effectively blinded the tools that competitive players and tournament organizers have relied on for years.

The End of Open Data

The core of the issue lies in how Epic Games handles its Application Programming Interface (API). Previously, third-party sites could query Epic’s servers to retrieve detailed match histories, live matchmaking statistics, and tournament placements. Players simply had to set their in-game privacy settings to public.

Under the new Chapter 7 architecture, Epic has deprecated those legacy endpoints. Now, the game developer has shifted to a strict, privacy-first data model. Even if players opt to share their profiles, the API no longer broadcasts the granular, match-by-match telemetry required to build comprehensive player histories. Instead, external platforms only receive basic, highly generalized statistics.

The change was instant and devastating for tracking sites. Overnight, millions of active profiles went dark, displaying error messages or frozen statistics that no longer update in real time.

Competitive Scene Left in the Dark

This API blackout does not just affect casual players looking to show off their stats. It strikes at the heart of the competitive Fortnite ecosystem. Professional teams, coaches, and scout analysts use these tracking platforms to monitor performance trends, evaluate potential recruits, and study opponent behavior.

“We are essentially scouting blind now,” says Marcus Vance, an analyst for a prominent European esports organization. “Without access to accurate, match-by-match data, we can’t verify scrim results, analyze rotational paths, or even confirm if a player is performing at a high level consistently. We are back to relying on manually recorded screenshots and streams.”

On top of that, the popular Power Rankings (PR) system, which acts as the unofficial leaderboard for competitive Fortnite, has been severely disrupted. Without automated data streams to verify tournament results and player placements, maintaining accurate PR leaderboards has become an administrative nightmare.

Privacy Regulations or Control?

Epic Games has not commented extensively on the API changes, but industry insiders suggest the shift is driven by growing global privacy regulations. With a massive portion of the Fortnite player base consisting of minors, Epic has faced increasing pressure from regulators to protect children’s online data. Restricting public access to player telemetry by default aligns with stricter compliance frameworks worldwide.

However, some developers of third-party tools argue that Epic could have implemented a more nuanced opt-in system rather than a blanket shutdown. They point out that these tools have helped keep the community engaged for years, acting as free marketing for the game’s competitive scene.

What Lies Ahead for Trackers?

Tracker Network, the parent company of Fortnite Tracker, is currently scrambling to find workarounds. While some basic features have been restored by scraping public leaderboard data, the deep, analytical insights that made the platform famous remain out of reach.

The company has urged its users to remain patient while they negotiate with Epic Games for official partner access. But with Epic historically favoring closed ecosystems, a return to the open-data glory days seems highly unlikely. For now, Fortnite’s competitive scene is entering a new, much quieter era.
