Costco Cracks Down on Filming After TikTok Dance Trends Block Aisles

Pushing a giant flatbed cart through a crowded Costco on a Saturday afternoon is already a test of patience. Lately, shoppers say, it has become an obstacle course.

Following months of complaints from frustrated members, Costco Wholesale has begun strictly enforcing its long-standing policies regarding photography and videography inside its warehouse clubs. The move comes directly in response to a surge of viral social media stunts, tripod setups, and choreographed TikTok dance routines that have turned bulk-paper-towel aisles into makeshift broadcast studios.

Tightening the Rules on Warehouse Video

Costco has never openly welcomed unauthorized cameras. Like many private club operators, the company has long held a clause in its membership agreement reserving the right to restrict recording on warehouse premises. Yet for years, local managers largely looked the other way when customers snapped photos of product prices or filmed brief video clips of bargain finds to send to family.

That lenient posture changed as social media trends shifted from quick product recommendations to elaborate, multi-person productions. In recent months, warehouse staff across the United States have received updated guidance reminding them to intervene whenever filming creates congestion, violates member privacy, or disrupts standard store operations.

Shoppers who set up tripods, ring lights, or microphones without prior corporate clearance are now routinely told by floor supervisors to pack up their gear immediately. Those who refuse risk having their memberships canceled on the spot.

How TikTok Dances Sparked Shopper Backlash

The pushback reached a boiling point over the past year on platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels. Content creators began treating Costco’s wide, concrete-floored aisles as expansive dance stages. Videos featuring creators dancing in front of rotisserie chicken warmers, staging synchronized routines in the freezer section, and jumping onto pallet displays racked up millions of views.

While the clips generated online engagement, the reality inside the buildings was far less entertaining for the people trying to buy groceries.

Frustrated members took to online forums like Reddit and Costco customer feedback channels to voice their annoyance. Shoppers described being forced to wait while creators completed multiple takes of a dance, finding entire aisles blocked by tripods, and having cameras shoved near their children without consent.

For a retailer that relies heavily on a paid membership model—where customers pay an annual fee ranging from $65 to $130 for access—maintaining an orderly, efficient shopping environment is central to the business.

What the Official Policy Actually Says

Costco’s policy on personal recording is straightforward, even if many casual shoppers were unaware of it until recently. According to company operational guidelines, unauthorized commercial photography, videography, and recording of any kind are prohibited inside all warehouse locations.

  • Personal Photos: Taking quick pictures of prices, packaging, or receipts for personal reference is still generally permitted, provided it does not disturb others.
  • Tripods and Equipment: Setting up external gear, including stands, lighting rigs, and professional audio equipment, is strictly prohibited without corporate press credentials.
  • Shopper and Staff Privacy: Filming employees while they work or capturing identifiable images of other members without their explicit permission is grounds for immediate removal.
  • Live Streaming: Extended live streaming while walking the aisles is discouraged, especially when it impedes foot traffic or involves customer interactions.

Costco representatives have emphasized that the warehouse is private property. When customers sign their membership agreements, they agree to abide by house rules designed to keep the environment safe and accessible for everyone.

A Broader Pushback Against Public Influencer Culture

Costco is not the only company grappling with the friction between viral content creation and everyday retail operations. Over the past two years, major retailers and fitness chains have faced similar dilemmas.

Target and Trader Joe’s have occasionally asked creators to stop filming extended product reviews in narrow aisles. High-end gym chains like Equinox and mass-market fitness centers like Planet Fitness have implemented strict zero-camera zones in locker rooms and workout floors to protect member privacy.

Retail analysts note that warehouse clubs face a unique operational challenge. Costco warehouses move massive volumes of inventory rapidly using forklifts and heavy pallet jacks. Having distracted individuals staging video routines in high-traffic zones creates not just a customer service headache, but a genuine workplace safety hazard.

What Happens If Shoppers Break the Rules

Costco generally relies on a progressive approach to enforce the policy. In most instances, an employee or floor manager will simply approach the creator and politely ask them to stop recording and stow their mobile device or camera gear.

However, the company has made it clear that pushback will not be tolerated. Members who argue with warehouse staff, become confrontational, or resume filming after being warned face immediate revocation of their membership cards. Under Costco’s terms, the company retains the right to refund a membership fee and terminate an account at its sole discretion.

For the vast majority of warehouse members who simply want to grab bulk groceries and an affordable hot dog without dodging smartphone tripods, the stepped-up enforcement cannot come soon enough.
