West Coast Eagles Set for High-Stakes Plays as AFL Trade Period Opens

The AFL trade period is officially here, and no club holds a more intriguing hand than the West Coast Eagles. After a 2026 campaign that showed brief flashes of promise under senior coach Andrew McQualter, the hierarchy in Perth seems done with waiting. The rebuild has been long. It has been painful. Now, the club is preparing to leverage its significant draft assets to fast-track a return to finals football.

At the center of everything is Pick 3. It is a prized asset in a draft class considered deep with midfield talent. For a club that has historically valued high draft selections, the temptation to bring in another elite teenager is strong. Yet, whispers out of Mineral Resources Park suggest the Eagles are actively listening to offers. They want to know what that selection can fetch in terms of ready-made, elite talent.

The Chase for a Superstar

For nearly eighteen months, the rumor mill has linked Sydney Swans superstar Chad Warner with a return to his home state. Warner, an East Fremantle product, is the kind of dynamic, goal-kicking midfielder the Eagles desperately lack. Acquiring a player of his caliber would require a king’s ransom. It would likely cost Pick 3, a future first-rounder, and a massive salary package.

But can the Eagles afford not to make that phone call? The clock is ticking. West Coast needs elite ball-winners to support their young core. While Reuben Ginbey and Elijah Hewett have shown they can match it with the league’s best in patches, they need help. They need a seasoned prime-mover who can take the heat off them every single week.

There is also the Harley Reid factor. The young Victorian phenom is already the face of the franchise. Keeping Reid happy and committed to Perth long-term means proving the club can win, and win soon. Bringing in a player like Warner would send a massive signal of intent to Reid and the entire competition.

Balancing Youth and Experience

List manager Matthew Clarke faces a delicate balancing act. The Eagles cannot afford to completely strip themselves of young draft talent. The scars of the late-2010s trade strategy, which left the list severely top-heavy and vulnerable to a historic collapse, are still fresh in the minds of supporters.

If a megadeal for a superstar midfielder falls through, West Coast has a backup plan. Sources suggest they are open to splitting Pick 3. By trading down slightly in the first round, they could secure multiple top-15 selections. This would allow them to bring in a couple of high-end youngsters while still retaining late-round capital to facilitate smaller trades for depth players.

The Eagles have struggled with squad depth for years. When injuries strike, the drop-off in talent has been stark. Club powerbrokers know they need to find value on the fringes of other lists. They need durable, professional players who can fill roles immediately.

What the Club is Saying

West Coast general manager of football Gavin Bell has kept his cards close to his chest, but his recent public statements hint at an aggressive approach. The club is no longer content with just being competitive; they want to start climbing the ladder.

“We have put ourselves in a position where we have options,” Bell said earlier this week. “We’ve done the hard work over the last few years to reset our draft hand. Now, we have to look at what gives our group the best chance to take the next step. If that means bringing in elite, established talent, we will absolutely explore that. But we won’t do it at the expense of our long-term stability.”

It is a classic piece of trade-week diplomacy. Yet, rival list managers aren’t buying the conservative talk. The general consensus around the league is that West Coast is ready to strike. They have the salary cap space, they have the draft capital, and they have the motivation.

The next ten days will shape the future of the West Coast Eagles for the next decade. If they play their cards right, they could set themselves up for a rapid rise. If they miscalculate, they risk prolonging their stay in the AFL wilderness. One thing is certain: they will not be silent bystanders.
