Epic Games Store Launches on iOS in Japan as Fortnite Returns

Fortnite is officially back on iPhones in Japan.

Epic Games launched its dedicated mobile storefront for iOS users in the country this week. By doing so, the developer is leveraging a landmark antitrust law designed to strip Apple of its absolute control over app distribution. The move marks a major victory for the North Carolina-based gaming giant, which has spent years waging a global legal and public relations campaign against mobile platform monopolies.

Japanese iPhone owners can now download the Epic Games Store directly from the web, bypassing Apple’s native App Store entirely. Once installed, the marketplace provides access to Epic’s flagship battle royale title, alongside other popular multiplayer games like Fall Guys and Rocket League Sideswipe. For local players, it ends a four-year exile that began when Apple yanked Fortnite from its platform globally in August 2020.

Breaking the Walled Garden

The launch was made possible by Japan’s newly enforced Act on Promotion of Competition for Specified Smartphone Software. Passed by the Japanese parliament, the legislation targets the duopoly of Apple and Google. It prohibits dominant mobile platform operators from blocking third-party app stores and alternative payment systems, forcing them to open up their devices to outside competition.

The law closely mirrors the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which enabled Epic to launch a similar marketplace for European iOS users earlier this year. Under threat of massive financial penalties, Apple has been forced to comply, though the tech giant has repeatedly expressed security concerns regarding sideloading and alternative stores.

Japan’s fair-trade regulators have taken a strict stance. Under the new law, companies that fail to comply face fines up to 20% of their domestic revenue from the offending service. For repeated violations, that penalty can skyrocket to 30%. Facing these stiff consequences, Apple had little choice but to enable the technical plumbing required for Epic to launch its store in the Japanese market.

A Long Battle for Mobile Freedom

The return of Fortnite to Japanese iOS devices marks another milestone in Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney’s fight against the standard 30% platform fee. The feud ignited in 2020 when Epic introduced a direct payment system inside Fortnite, violating Apple’s developer guidelines. Apple responded by immediately banning the game, prompting a series of antitrust lawsuits in the United States and abroad.

While U.S. courts largely sided with Apple on antitrust claims, the legal pressure pushed regulators worldwide to act. Japan is a particularly lucrative market. The country boasts one of the most profitable mobile gaming sectors in the world, with millions of highly engaged players who spend heavily on in-game items. Bypassing the App Store means Epic can pocket a far greater share of those digital purchases.

Epic is offering other developers a much sweeter deal to join its marketplace. The company charges a 12% commission fee on game sales, compared to Apple’s standard 30% cut. For games that use their own payment processing systems, Epic takes zero commission. This pricing strategy is intended to lure developers who have long complained about the high cost of doing business on iOS.

Installing the Store: A Multi-Step Process

Getting the Epic Games Store onto an iPhone remains slightly more complicated than downloading a standard app. Because Apple does not host the installer on the App Store, users must visit Epic’s official website using Safari. From there, they are guided through a series of system prompts to authorize the installation.

Epic has criticized these extra steps, labeling them “scare screens” designed to discourage consumers. The setup process involves navigating iOS settings to manually trust Epic as a developer, a hurdle that might confuse casual gamers. Still, Epic expects enthusiastic Fortnite fans to jump through the necessary hoops to get the game back on their screens.

With Japan and the EU now open, attention turns to other major jurisdictions. Regulators in the United Kingdom, South Korea, and Australia are currently reviewing their own digital competition rules. If those nations follow suit, the mobile app ecosystem could look radically different in the coming years, with Epic Games positioned at the forefront of a decentralized app economy.
