Fortnite Returns to UK iPhones via Epic Games Store
Fortnite is coming back to British iPhones. It has been a long wait for local players. Apple booted the blockbusting battle royale game from its App Store back in 2020. That move sparked a bitter, multi-year legal war over developer fees and monopoly power. Now, the regulatory environment is shifting rapidly. Epic Games is preparing to launch its own mobile storefront on iOS in the United Kingdom, bringing its flagship game along for the ride.
The Law That Changed Everything
This UK comeback isn’t happening through Apple’s official App Store. Instead, Epic is taking advantage of a brand-new piece of British legislation. The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers (DMCC) Act recently passed into law. It gives the country’s antitrust watchdog, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), teeth to rein in tech monopolies.
Under the DMCC, the CMA can flag dominant tech firms as having Strategic Market Status. Once a company gets this label, regulators can force them to open up their platforms to competitors. Epic plans to make its move the moment these rules are enforced. It is a massive crack in Apple’s long-defended walled garden.
Following the European Blueprint
British gamers will soon experience what European players already have. Epic launched its games store on iOS in the European Union earlier this year. That rollout was made possible by Brussels’ Digital Markets Act (DMA). It proved that alternative app stores could work on iPhones, even if the setup process remains somewhat clunky.

Apple did not make the EU transition easy. The tech giant introduced new hurdles, including a controversial Core Technology Fee. This system charges developers 50 euro cents for every annual app install after they pass one million downloads. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney has been highly vocal about these policies, calling them malicious compliance.
Sweeney is optimistic about the UK’s approach, however. He praised the DMCC Act as a vital step toward restoring true market competition. Epic intends to use the UK law to bypass Apple’s standard 30% cut on in-app purchases, offering players alternative payment methods.
What This Means for Players
So, how will UK players actually get Fortnite back on their screens? The process won’t be as simple as clicking a button in the iOS App Store. Users will need to follow a few steps:
- Visit the official Epic Games website on their iPhone.
- Download the Epic Games Store app directly from the browser.
- Approve the installation through iOS security prompts.
- Launch the Epic Store and download Fortnite.
Apple has long argued that this practice, known as sideloading, poses security risks. They claim it bypasses the rigorous safety checks of the official App Store, potentially exposing users to malware. Epic disputes this, arguing that their own store maintains strict security standards.
The Road Ahead
The exact launch date for the UK store is still up in the air. Epic is currently waiting for the CMA to finalize its specific codes of conduct for Apple. Once those regulatory frameworks are locked in, the Epic Games Store will go live. For British gamers, a four-year exile is finally nearing its end.
