Epic Games to Relaunch Fortnite on iOS in Japan

Fortnite Returns to Japanese iPhones in 2025

Fortnite is headed back to iOS in Japan. Epic Games announced the battle royale will return to iPhones by late 2025, bypassing Apple’s strict App Store rules. The move capitalizes on a sweeping new antitrust law passed by Japanese regulators, designed to break up tech monopolies.

The announcement marks another major crack in Apple’s “walled garden.” For years, the tech giant has controlled exactly what software can run on its mobile devices. Now, foreign governments are forcing Apple to open the doors. Japan is the latest nation to step in, following the European Union’s lead in legalizing third-party app stores.

How Japan Forced Apple’s Hand

In June 2024, the Japanese parliament passed the Act on Promotion of Competition for Specified Smartphone Software. This landmark legislation aims to foster a fairer digital marketplace. It targets dominant platform holders—specifically Apple and Google—and forbids them from blocking rival app marketplaces or alternative payment processors.

The law carries heavy penalties. Companies that violate the regulations face fines of up to 20% of their domestic revenue from the affected services. For repeat offenders, that penalty can jump to 30%. Facing such steep financial threats, Apple has little choice but to comply.

Epic Games plans to launch its own digital storefront, the Epic Games Store, directly on iOS in Japan. Japanese iPhone users will be able to download the Epic storefront and install Fortnite through it. It is a direct replication of the strategy Epic deployed in the European Union, where Fortnite recently returned to iOS after a four-year absence.

A Long-Running Feud

The battle between Epic and Apple began in August 2020. In an intentional provocation, Epic updated Fortnite to allow players to buy in-game currency directly from them, circumventing Apple’s 30% cut. Apple immediately kicked the game off the App Store. A bitter, multi-year legal war ensued in the United States, but the courts largely ruled in Apple’s favor on antitrust claims.

Despite the American legal setback, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney took the fight to international lawmakers. That lobbying has paid off. The European Union’s Digital Markets Act forced Apple to permit third-party marketplaces earlier this year. Epic launched its iOS store in Europe in August 2024. Now, Japan’s new legislation provides the exact regulatory lever Epic needed to expand its mobile storefront to Asia.

What This Means for Japanese Gamers

Japan is one of the world’s most profitable mobile gaming markets. Millions of players prefer smartphones over traditional consoles or PCs for their daily gaming. Missing out on the iOS platform in Japan has been a major blind spot for Epic.

“We are excited about the future of mobile gaming in Japan,” Epic Games said in a statement following the announcement. “The Japanese government’s commitment to open platforms will give consumers more choices and developers better deals.”

The transition will not happen overnight. Japan’s new competition law is expected to fully take effect by late 2025. Epic is preparing its infrastructure well in advance. While Apple has consistently argued that third-party app stores compromise user security and privacy, the momentum is clearly shifting toward open ecosystems. For Japanese gamers, the long wait to play Fortnite natively on their iPhones is finally coming to an end.

A Ripple Effect Across the Tech World

Epic’s victory in Japan is not just about one game. It represents a broader shift in how global regulators view big tech. For a decade, Apple argued that its closed ecosystem was necessary to keep users safe from malware and scams. However, regulators in Brussels, Tokyo, and Seoul are increasingly skeptical of this defense, viewing it as a convenient excuse to maintain a highly profitable monopoly.

Other mobile developers are watching Epic’s moves closely. Under Apple’s traditional system, developers must hand over up to 30% of their digital sales. Epic’s alternative store promises a much friendlier 12% cut, matching its PC marketplace rate. If more developers migrate to Epic’s store, it could fundamentally alter the economics of mobile software distribution globally.

Still, challenges remain. Downloading a third-party app store on iOS is not as seamless as using the pre-installed App Store. In the European Union, Apple has introduced several warning screens and multi-step installation prompts that Epic has criticized as “scare tactics.” It remains to be seen whether Apple will implement similar friction for Japanese users, or if local regulators will step in to ensure a frictionless user experience.
