Villa’s CL Clash in Bruges: Emery Navigates Injuries and Tactics

Aston Villa’s perfect start in the Champions League faces a stern test in Belgium. Unai Emery has guided his team to three straight wins in Europe. Now, they head to the Jan Breydel Stadium to take on Club Brugge. But it isn’t just the opposition giving Emery food for thought. A couple of fresh injury concerns and a congested fixture list mean the Spanish manager has some major tactical decisions to make.

The Right-Back Dilemma

The biggest talking point surrounds the right-back slot. Matty Cash picked up a calf issue during the recent defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. While the injury isn’t thought to be severe, Emery might not want to risk him with a trip to Anfield on the horizon. If Cash sits this one out, Ezri Konsa is the most likely candidate to slide over to the right. That would open up a spot in central defense next to Pau Torres, with Diego Carlos ready to step in. It is a system Villa have used before, offering more defensive solidity but sacrificing some of Cash’s overlapping runs.

Midfield Restructuring and Key Returns

In midfield, Ross Barkley is ruled out. The experienced playmaker suffered a small muscle injury before the Spurs game and didn’t travel with the squad. His absence limits Emery’s ability to change things up in the second half. However, the return of Boubacar Kamara offers a massive boost. Kamara has looked sharp in his recent cameo appearances after recovering from a serious knee injury. Whether he is ready to start a high-intensity European match is another question. John McGinn and Youri Tielemans are expected to anchor the midfield, but Kamara’s presence on the bench gives Emery a high-quality insurance policy.

Tyrone Mings is another player pushing for minutes. Like Kamara, Mings has returned from a long-term ACL injury. While he played in the League Cup, a Champions League start might be a step too far just yet. Still, having his leadership in the dressing room is vital for a squad experiencing this level of competition for the first time in four decades.

Watkins or Durán Up Front?

Up front, the selection headache remains the same. Ollie Watkins or Jhon Durán? Watkins has been the reliable Premier League starter, but Durán’s European exploits have been spectacular. The young Colombian striker has already scored match-winning goals off the bench, most notably against Bayern Munich. Emery has hinted at starting them together in the past, but a compact Brugge midfield makes that unlikely from the kickoff. Expect Watkins to lead the line, with Morgan Rogers operating just behind him to link the play. Rogers has been excellent this season, using his power and direct running to tear through opposition lines.

The Belgian Challenge

Club Brugge will not make life easy. Led by Nicky Hayen, the Belgian champions are disciplined and transition quickly. Hans Vanaken remains their chief creator, a player Villa must keep quiet if they want to control the tempo. Brugge’s home crowd is famously hostile, and they will look to exploit any early nerves in the Villa backline.

For Emery, balance is key. He wants to secure qualification for the knockout stages as quickly as possible. Yet, he cannot ignore the heavy domestic workload. Rotating the squad without losing momentum is a delicate art. “We have to manage the minutes,” Emery noted in his pre-match press conference. “But the Champions League requires our absolute best. We cannot relax for a single minute.”

Villa have surprised many by sitting near the top of the Champions League table. A win in Bruges would put them on the brink of automatic qualification for the round of 16. It is a massive opportunity, but one that requires tactical discipline and a bit of squad rotation mastery from the man in the dugout.
