Over the past few weeks, anonymous handles on social media platforms—principally X (formerly Twitter)—have triggered widespread chaos across the country’s aviation network. Each message followed a chillingly familiar pattern: specific flight numbers, claims of explosives concealed in cargo or lavatories, and urgent ultimatums. While every alert proved to be a hoax, the operational fallout was immediate and severe.
Following the Digital Breadcrumbs Across Borders
Unmasking the people behind the keyboard has proved complicated. Investigators from specialized cyber units, including the Delhi Police Special Cell and state cyber command centers, quickly realized the perpetrators were not amateur pranksters using domestic IP addresses. Instead, they relied on sophisticated anonymizing networks.
The accounts used virtual private networks (VPNs) based out of European and North American jurisdictions, disposable email services, and routing layers designed to throw off domestic monitoring. In response, Indian agencies reached out to international counterparts through Interpol channels and bilateral Mutual Legal Assistance Treaties (MLATs).
Formal requests have been served to major tech platforms to preserve server logs, account creation metadata, and IP connection records before automated retention windows expire. According to sources close to the probe, forensic teams are analyzing subtle linguistic patterns and posting timestamps across dozens of suspended accounts to determine whether a single coordinated ring is orchestrating the campaign.
A Severe Strain on Flight Operations
For budget carrier Air India Express, which operates dozens of daily routes linking tier-two Indian cities with Gulf destinations and regional hubs, the disruptions hit hard. Standard security standard operating procedures (SOPs) allow zero margin for error. A single tweet forces immediate, expensive emergency responses.
Whenever a threat lands online, aviation security committees convene within minutes. Flights mid-air are diverted to the nearest designated isolation bays. Passengers disembark via emergency stairs or slides, followed by exhaustive, hours-long searches involving bomb disposal squads, sniffer dogs, and manual inspection of every piece of checked luggage.

For passengers boarding flights across the country, secondary ladder checks and enhanced baggage screening remain the visible cost of an invisible, borderless cyber nuisance.
