Epic Games API Changes Disrupt Fortnite Tracker Before Fall Season

Epic Games just threw a massive wrench into the competitive Fortnite scene. With the highly anticipated Fall 2026 competitive season just weeks away, a sudden overhaul to Epic’s application programming interface (API) has left the community’s favorite scouting tool, Fortnite Tracker, virtually blind.

For years, players, coaches, and esports organizations have relied on third-party tracking sites to analyze stats, verify tournament placements, and scout upcoming talent. Now, those databases are empty for millions of accounts. The sudden shift has sent shockwaves through the competitive community, leaving many wondering how tournament organizers will seed events without reliable data.

A Sudden Shift to Default Privacy

The root of the issue lies in Epic’s latest privacy-first update. Historically, Fortnite player statistics were open by default. Third-party sites could query Epic’s API to pull match histories, kill-death ratios, and placement records. If players wanted to hide their stats, they had to manually dig into the in-game settings to turn them off.

Epic has flipped the switch. Following the latest patch, all accounts have been set to private by default. Unless a player actively navigates through their account settings to opt back into public sharing, their stats remain completely invisible to external platforms.

“We saw our active tracking database shrink by nearly 75% overnight,” says Marcus Vance, a lead data analyst who works closely with tournament organizers. “It isn’t just that casual players are disappearing from the leaderboards. Even seasoned pros are showing up as unranked because they haven’t realized their settings were reset. It is creating a massive headache for tournament seeding.”

The Fall 2026 Competitive Season at Risk

Timing is everything in esports, and this update could not have come at a worse moment. The Fall 2026 season, which features some of the largest prize pools of the year, is scheduled to kick off next month. Teams are actively recruiting, and analysts are scrambling to build scouting reports on rivals.

Without the granular data provided by Fortnite Tracker, the scouting process has ground to a halt. Coaches can no longer easily verify how a potential recruit performs under pressure in high-tier lobbies. Instead, they have to rely on raw gameplay footage or manual screenshots, which are easily forged.

The Impact on Scrim Culture

In the high-stakes world of Fortnite scrims—practice matches organized by players themselves—the impact is already being felt. Organizers use tracker bots to automatically calculate lobby points and hand out bans to players who break rules, like attacking opponents before a designated storm circle. With the API shut off, these automated Discord bots have stopped working entirely. Teams are forced to manually calculate scores, dragging out what used to be an automated, seamless process.

Why Epic Made the Move

While the competitive scene is frustrated, industry experts point out that Epic’s decision likely stems from broader legal and social pressures. Over the past few years, video game publishers have faced intense scrutiny over how they handle the data of minors. By locking down player profiles by default, Epic shields itself from potential regulatory backlash regarding children’s privacy.

There is also the issue of in-game toxicity. Publicly available stats have long been used by players to gatekeep lobbies or harass teammates who might have lower win rates. By hiding these metrics, Epic hopes to foster a less hostile environment for casual players.

How Players Can Restore Their Stats

For those who want to keep their public profile active, the fix is relatively simple, though many players remain unaware of it. To restore tracking, users must follow these steps:

  • Log into the Fortnite client and open the main menu.
  • Navigate to the Account and Privacy settings tab.
  • Scroll down to the Gameplay Privacy section.
  • Toggle the Show on Career Leaderboard setting to On.

Tracker Network, the parent company behind Fortnite Tracker, has put out several alerts on social media urging competitive players to update their settings immediately. “We are working on new ways to help players verify their profiles,” the company stated in a brief community post. “But ultimately, we are at the mercy of the default API settings. If you want to be scouted, you have to turn your stats back on manually.”

As the Fall 2026 season approaches, the race is on to educate the player base. Whether the competitive community can adapt in time remains to be seen, but for now, the leaderboard rankings remain largely in the dark.
