Epic Games Restricts Fortnite API, Sparking Stat Tracker Outrage

For years, competitive Fortnite players had a simple way to size up their competition. They just typed a username into Fortnite Tracker. Within seconds, a detailed breakdown of wins, kills, and match history appeared. But that changed overnight.

Epic Games quietly rolled out a major update to its API privacy settings. The sudden tweak has sent shockwaves through the community. Now, third-party tracking websites cannot access or display player match histories by default. If players want their data public, they must manually opt in. For millions of users, their digital paper trail has suddenly gone dark.

The End of Public Scouting?

The competitive Fortnite scene relies heavily on data. Coaches use match history to analyze opponents. Teams scout rising talent by looking at tournament performance and daily scrims. Casual players use it to track their own improvement. It was a system that worked for years.

With the new API restrictions, that data pool has shrunk. Many players do not even know the setting exists, let alone how to turn it back on. The result is a fractured leaderboard. Community tournaments are finding it harder to seed brackets fairly. Even identifying potential cheaters or “smurfs”—experienced players using new accounts to crush beginners—has become much more difficult.

Privacy vs. Transparency

Epic Games has not hidden its motivations. The publisher has consistently pushed for stronger player privacy. This is especially true given the massive number of minors playing Fortnite. Protecting younger users from online harassment is a top priority. Stat-shaming is a real issue in competitive gaming. Lobby hosts sometimes kick players with low K/D ratios before a match even begins. By hiding these stats behind an opt-in wall, Epic shields players from this kind of toxicity.

But critics argue the move goes too far. They point out that competitive esports thrive on transparency. “It makes scouting completely impossible,” says one amateur tournament organizer who asked to remain anonymous. “We used to run background checks on players to ensure they weren’t ban-evading. Now, we’re flying blind.”

How Fortnite Tracker is Adapting

The team behind Fortnite Tracker, one of the most visited sites in the gaming community, quickly felt the impact. They had to redesign parts of their platform to accommodate the changes. Visitors to the site are now greeted with banners explaining how to make their stats public again.

To restore their profiles, players must log into Fortnite, head to the Account and Privacy settings menu, and toggle “Show on Career Leaderboard” to the “On” position. Only then will third-party sites be allowed to fetch their match records. It sounds simple. Yet, getting millions of casual gamers to dig through menu settings is a massive hurdle.

A Growing Trend in Gaming

Fortnite is not the first game to restrict public data access. Other major competitive titles have taken similar paths over the last few years. Riot Games limits raw API access for Valorant and League of Legends to protect player strategies and reduce toxic behavior. Blizzard made Overwatch profiles private by default years ago, citing similar concerns about lobby toxicity.

As the competitive season continues, the Fortnite community will have to adjust. Some tournament organizers are already making public stats a mandatory requirement for entry. For casual players who just want to play in peace, the change is a welcome shield. But for those trying to climb the ranks and make a name for themselves, Epic’s new wall is just one more obstacle to clear.
