Fortnite Gift Cards Going Green: Epic Games to Phase Out Plastic
Gamers buying V-Bucks for their friends will soon notice a major change at the checkout counter. Epic Games has announced a massive environmental initiative. The company plans to completely phase out its plastic Fortnite gift cards, replacing them with biodegradable paper alternatives.
This transition is not just a small trial. Epic is partnering with some of the world’s largest retail chains to pull off a global swap. The goal is to have the new, eco-friendly cards fully replace the old plastic ones on store shelves ahead of the busy 2026 holiday shopping season.
The Environmental Cost of Gaming Gift Cards
It is a massive logistical challenge. Walk into any Walmart, Target, or local grocery store, and you will see racks lined with colorful gift cards. Among them, Fortnite’s bright blue designs are usually the most popular. Millions of these cards are purchased, scratched, redeemed online, and then immediately tossed in the trash.
Because traditional gift cards are typically made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), they do not break down. Instead, they sit in landfills for centuries, contributing to the global plastic waste crisis. Epic’s new move aims to tackle this issue head-on.
A Fresh, Plastic-Free Design
The upcoming cards will be made of high-quality, certified sustainable paperboard. They are designed to disintegrate naturally after disposal. To make them even greener, the company plans to use soy-based inks for the vibrant graphics players love. Even the scratch-off backing, which conceals the digital code, will feature a special plastic-free coating.

How will gamers tell the difference? Visually, very little will change. The cards will still feature iconic Fortnite imagery, including the legendary loot llama and fan-favorite characters like Peely. The key difference will be the feel. The new paper cards will have a matte, textured finish instead of the glossy, smooth surface of traditional plastic.
How the Retail Rollout Will Work
Retailers are already preparing for the logistical shift. Epic is working closely with major distributors to manage the inventory changeover. Stores will sell through their existing stock of plastic cards first to prevent unnecessary waste. Once those are gone, they will stock the new paper versions.
While digital purchases are incredibly popular, physical gift cards remain a powerhouse during the holidays. Grandparents, parents, and friends still prefer giving a physical item that can be wrapped and opened. That is why Epic is keeping physical cards on shelves but changing what they are made of.
Setting a New Industry Standard
Epic’s decision could put pressure on other major gaming companies to follow suit. Industry giants like Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo still rely heavily on plastic cards for their digital storefronts. If Epic’s paper cards prove successful and durable on store racks, the entire gaming section at your local retailer might look very different by the end of the decade.
The global rollout will happen in stages. Players will start seeing the first wave of paper V-Bucks cards in select regions by late 2025, with the transition fully completed worldwide by the fall of 2026.
