Epic Games Tackles Fortnite Chapter 7 Server and Lag Issues
Lag and Queue Delays Plague the Latest Update
Fortnite players eager to test out the upcoming Chapter 7 preview patch ran into a massive roadblock this week. Instead of diving smoothly into the game’s highly anticipated next era, thousands of players found themselves staring at endless loading screens and experiencing staggering lag. The problems started almost immediately after the update went live.
Social media quickly filled with complaints. Players reported ping times spiking past 200 milliseconds, turning fast-paced build fights into sluggish slideshows. Many could not even get into a match. Long queues ended in error messages, kicking squads back to the lobby before they could catch a glimpse of the new map changes. The server issues were not limited to one area, either. Both North American and European servers felt the squeeze, leaving a massive portion of the player base unable to play.
Epic Games Investigates Matchmaking Failures
Epic Games did not take long to react. Through their official @FortniteStatus account on X, the developers acknowledged that things were going south quickly.
“We are actively investigating issues causing high latency and matchmaking failures across multiple regions,” the studio posted shortly after the complaints peaked.

Why the Preview Patch Caused Server Strain
While Epic did not give a detailed breakdown of what broke, the gaming community has some clear theories. Preview patches are notoriously tricky. They often run on scaled-down server setups designed more for testing features than handling millions of eager fans rushing the gates all at once. When a major build like Chapter 7 gets teased, the sheer volume of logins can easily crush the database that pairs players up.
To keep the ship from sinking completely, Epic’s backend team started making adjustments behind the scenes. They took several quick steps to ease the pressure:
- Temporarily disabled several experimental matchmaking queues to reduce overall system load.
- Placed temporary limits on lobby capacities in the hardest-hit server regions.
- Deployed live backend hotfixes to optimize player database requests.
How to Improve Connection Quality Now
Things are slowly starting to look up. Over the last several hours, players have reported that connection speeds are getting back to normal. The massive ping spikes have calmed down, and the matchmaking queues are moving again. Still, the situation is not completely perfect. Some players are still flagging random disconnects and packet loss, especially during busy evening hours.
Epic says they are not done tweaking the servers yet. They plan to monitor performance throughout the week to ensure the game remains stable. If you are still seeing high latency, Epic recommends restarting your game client to make sure you have the latest backend updates installed. You can also try changing your matchmaking region manually in the settings menu, which might help bypass the congested local servers until things settle down completely.
