Epic Games Partners with Retailers for Holographic Fortnite Cards

Epic Games is putting a futuristic spin on the classic checkout-lane gift card. Starting this holiday season, Fortnite fans will be able to buy new interactive holographic gift cards at major brick-and-mortar stores. These aren’t just shiny pieces of plastic. They use augmented reality to let players preview exclusive 2026 winter-themed cosmetics right in the store aisle before they even load up the game.

The move marks a significant push by Epic to blend physical retail with digital rewards. By partnering with retail heavyweights like Target, Walmart, and Best Buy, the developer hopes to capture the holiday shopping rush and give players a tangible collectible they can actually hold.

Scanning the Future

So, how does it actually work? Each card features a specialized lenticular layer that shifts as you tilt it. But the real magic happens when you point a smartphone camera at the packaging.

Using a quick QR code scan, shoppers can view a high-definition, three-dimensional hologram of the character skins hovering right above the card. It doesn’t require downloading a separate app. The web-based augmented reality interface shows off the skin’s animations, letting you see how the winter gear looks in motion before spending any cash.

‘We wanted to make buying V-Bucks feel like an event again,’ says Marcus Vance, an independent retail technology analyst. ‘Gift cards are usually a last-minute, boring purchase. By adding an AR layer, Epic turns a simple stocking stuffer into an interactive experience. It is a smart way to grab the attention of shoppers dragging their families through the aisles.’

Exclusive Winter 2026 Rewards

The big draw for collectors is the exclusive digital loot. Epic is tying these cards directly to its upcoming Winter 2026 cosmetic lineup. These items won’t land in the standard in-game Fortnite Item Shop, making the physical cards the only way to secure them.

Depending on the card value you buy, the rewards scale up:

  • The $25 Card: Grants 2,800 V-Bucks and the ‘Frostbound Ranger’ character skin, which features a heavy parka covered in glowing, animated ice crystals.
  • The $50 Card: Comes with 5,000 V-Bucks, the ‘Frostbound Ranger’ skin, and the ‘Glacial Edge’ harvesting tool, which leaves a trail of frost with every swing.
  • The $100 Card: Unlocks the entire winter bundle, including a rare ‘Blizzard Sail’ glider and an exclusive lobby music track, along with 13,500 V-Bucks.

Epic confirmed that the digital codes on the back of the cards can be redeemed across all platforms, including PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile. The exclusive skins will become active in-game starting in December, coinciding with the launch of Fortnite’s seasonal winter event.

Why Physical Stores Still Matter

Physical retail stores have struggled to keep up with the shift toward purely digital video game purchases. For giant chains, selling physical game discs is a shrinking business. Gift cards have become their primary bridge to the massive gaming community.

This partnership gives physical stores an exclusive product that digital storefronts can’t replicate. You can’t get these specific holographic cards on the PlayStation Network or the Xbox Game Store. You have to physically walk into a retail location or order the physical card online from a participating partner.

Industry insiders believe this could spark a new trend in how digital gaming brands approach physical merchandising. If successful, Epic could easily replicate this model for future seasonal events, like Halloween or summer-themed updates.

The new cards are scheduled to hit shelves in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom starting November 10. Epic plans to expand the rollout to European and Australian retailers early next year. If you want to grab the exclusive winter gear, you will need to act fast; Epic has stated that these holographic cards will only be printed in a limited run through January 2026.
