Epic Games Launches Secure-V Gift Cards to Fight Fortnite Scams

Epic Games is taking a direct shot at the thriving gray market for Fortnite’s in-game currency. With the 2026 holiday shopping season rapidly approaching, the publisher has unveiled a new weapon against digital fraud: “Secure-V” digital gift cards.

The move is designed to dismantle the complex web of reseller scams that has plagued the gaming industry for years. For players, V-Bucks are a way to buy the latest skins and emotes. For online scammers, they are as good as cash.

The War on the Gray Market

The digital gift card ecosystem has long been vulnerable to exploitation. Fraudsters frequently purchase bulk digital codes using stolen credit cards. They then list these codes at a discount on unauthorized third-party marketplaces. By the time the legitimate cardholder notices the theft and files a chargeback, the code has already been sold to an unsuspecting Fortnite player.

When Epic Games inevitably cancels the fraudulent transaction, the victim’s Fortnite account can be locked or banned. It is a messy cycle. It leaves parents empty-handed, players frustrated, and Epic’s customer service teams overwhelmed.

“The secondary market has become a minefield for our community,” says Marcus Vance, Director of Platform Integrity at Epic Games. “With Secure-V, we are cutting out the middlemen who exploit our ecosystem. If a code is acquired fraudulently, or if someone tries to flip it on an unauthorized site, the security protocols will simply prevent it from activating.”

How Secure-V Works

So, how does the new system stop scammers in their tracks? The secret lies in dynamic, multi-layered encryption. Traditional digital gift cards rely on a static 16-digit code. These codes are vulnerable because they exist in databases from the moment they are printed or generated, making them easy targets for database leaks or database scraping bots.

Secure-V flips this model on its head. When a buyer purchases a digital card, no active code is generated initially. Instead, the buyer receives a secure link that requires multi-factor authentication. To redeem the V-Bucks, the buyer must either log into their Epic Games account directly or send a secure, single-use token to the recipient’s registered email address. This token expires within a short window if it is not claimed, preventing codes from sitting on reseller shelves for weeks.

Get Know Instant Access

It is a fast process. Epic claims the extra verification step takes less than ten seconds on a smartphone. But for bulk scammers using automated bots, it represents an insurmountable wall.

Timing the Launch for the Holidays

Epic is timing the rollout carefully. Secure-V is scheduled to go live in early November 2026, just before the chaos of Black Friday and the winter holidays. This is the peak season for gift card purchases—and, consequently, for holiday shopping scams.

The company is collaborating with major retail giants to ensure a smooth transition. Retailers like Amazon, Target, and Best Buy have already agreed to integrate the Secure-V API into their digital storefronts. This means when you buy a Fortnite gift card online from these retailers, the secure activation process will handle the transaction automatically behind the scenes.

What Happens to Old Gift Cards?

Players who still have older, traditional physical gift cards do not need to panic. Epic has confirmed that legacy codes will remain valid for the foreseeable future. However, the company plans to gradually phase them out. By mid-2027, Epic expects Secure-V to be the sole standard for all digital Fortnite currency transactions globally.

For parents trying to navigate the digital world this holiday season, the update offers some welcome peace of mind. Buying V-Bucks has often felt risky if you did not buy them directly through the game console. This change makes external purchases much safer.

Ultimately, Epic Games is sending a clear message to bad actors: the era of easy money from stolen Fortnite codes is coming to an end.
