How Fortnite’s New Battle Pass Rule Will Change the Item Shop

A Massive Shift in Fortnite’s Economy

For years, Fortnite built its massive empire on a simple, powerful psychological trick: fear of missing out. If you did not grind through a Battle Pass during a specific season, those skins were gone forever. Missing out on Darth Vader, Lara Croft, or Spider-Man meant living with perpetual regret. But Epic Games is finally tearing down that wall. A major policy shift means Battle Pass items will soon start trickling into the general Item Shop, completely changing how players acquire their favorite cosmetics.

The change, which Epic announced late last year, applies to cosmetics introduced from Chapter 5, Season 4 onward. Under the new rules, any item featured in a Battle Pass can make an appearance in the shop 18 months after that specific season wraps up. While 18 months sounds like a long time to wait, the clock is already ticking for the first batch of eligible items. This shift is set to redefine the game’s virtual marketplace.

Breaking the FOMO Cycle

The decision to end exclusivity was not made lightly. For seasons, players begged Epic to bring back old collaborative skins. Marvel characters, Star Wars icons, and original Fortnite designs remained locked in the vaults of older accounts. This created a lucrative, albeit highly illegal, black market for account selling. Players would pay hundreds of dollars just to get an account containing a single coveted skin from 2018.

By making future passes non-exclusive, Epic is taking a direct swipe at this secondary market. They are also making the game far more welcoming to newcomers. Imagine starting Fortnite today, seeing a cool skin, and realizing you can never, ever buy it. It is a frustrating onboarding experience. Now, new players just have to be patient. If they miss a pass, they can grab the items later, though they will have to pay premium V-Bucks prices instead of the highly discounted Battle Pass bundle rate.

The 18-Month Countdown Begins

So, when does the floodgate actually open? The new policy went into effect with the “Absolute Doom” season, which launched in August 2024. That season featured high-profile Marvel characters like Doctor Doom, Emma Frost, and Shuri. Since that season concluded in November 2024, the 18-month countdown is officially active.

Get Know Instant Access

Mathematically, we can expect the first wave of these previously exclusive items to land in the Item Shop around May 2026. When they do, the Item Shop will look very different. Instead of the usual rotation of generic skins and seasonal holiday outfits, Epic will have a massive back-catalog of highly detailed, licensed characters to drop whenever they need a revenue boost.

There is a catch, of course. Epic has made it clear that while these items *can* return, there is no guarantee they *will*. License agreements with external IP holders like Disney, Warner Bros., or anime studios still dictate what can be sold. If a licensing deal expires, those skins might still remain locked away. However, for Epic’s original creations, the path to a shop return is entirely clear.

What This Means for Collectors

Naturally, the community is split. Some veteran players feel their hard-earned rewards are being devalued. They spent hours grinding quests to unlock a skin that anyone can now buy with a credit card a year and a half later. To address this, Epic is keeping older Battle Pass items—anything from before Chapter 5, Season 4—strictly exclusive. Your classic Renegade Raider or original Omega skin remains safe and rare.

For the average player, though, this is a massive win. It removes the stress of having to play Fortnite like a second job just to complete a pass before the season ends. It also ensures that the game’s best artistic designs do not simply vanish into history. The Item Shop is about to become a much more exciting, and unpredictable, place to spend your V-Bucks.
