Fortnite Launches Marvel’s Secret Wars Bundle with Evolving Skins
A New Way to Play and Customize
Epic Games is pushing the boundaries of in-game cosmetics once again. The developer has launched a surprise “Marvel’s Secret Wars” pre-release bundle in the Fortnite Item Shop. It is a bold move. Instead of just selling static outfits, Epic has introduced a fresh mechanic: reactive skins that evolve based on collective player achievements.
The concept is simple but ambitious. When you buy the bundle, you get base versions of the new Marvel characters. However, their true forms are locked behind global milestones. Every player who participates in the current season’s matches contributes to a massive, community-wide progress bar. As the player base reaches specific targets—like total eliminations, damage dealt, or rifts closed—the skins transform for everyone who owns them.
How Global Progression Works
This collective progression system is a first for Fortnite. In the past, reactive skins changed based on an individual player’s performance in a single match, such as getting kills or surviving storm circles. This new system turns cosmetic progression into a team sport.
“We wanted to make the lead-up to the Secret Wars event feel like a true collaborative effort,” says Marcus Pierce, a fictional lead designer on Fortnite’s live events team. “Players aren’t just waiting for a countdown clock to hit zero anymore. They are actively working together to unlock the ultimate versions of these characters. It makes the entire community feel like a single strike team.”
What is Included in the Bundle?
The bundle itself costs 2,600 V-Bucks and features two central figures from the iconic comic book storyline:
- God Emperor Doom: Out of the box, Doom wears his classic, battle-worn armor. But as the global community hits the first milestone, his cape begins to glow with cosmic energy. By the final milestone, he shifts completely into his stark white, god-like robes, surrounded by a shimmering aura.
- The Beyonder: This skin follows a similar path. It starts as a shadowy, abstract silhouette. As the community completes challenges, the skin slowly reveals a detailed, star-filled cosmic armor.
- Battleworld Shattered Back Bling & Doom’s Scepter Pickaxe: Both of these items also feature reactive elements that tie into the global event progression.
Community Reactions
For players who prefer not to spend V-Bucks, Epic has made sure they aren’t entirely left out. While the premium skins require a purchase, completing the global challenges unlocks free event-themed sprays, loading screens, and a weapon wrap for everyone, regardless of whether they bought the bundle.
Reaction from the community has been largely positive, though some players have voiced concerns. On Reddit and X, fans praised the creative approach to monetization and community engagement. “It actually makes me want to grind the game because I know I’m helping everyone else unlock their styles,” wrote one user on the Fortnite Battle Royale subreddit.
Others are more skeptical. A few players pointed out that if the community fails to hit the final milestones, they might be left with incomplete skins they paid real money for. However, Epic has historically adjusted milestone requirements behind the scenes to ensure players don’t miss out on content they paid for. It is highly unlikely the developer would let the event end without unlocking the final stages.
The Secret Wars event is scheduled to culminate in a massive live event at the end of the month. Until then, the global progress tracker will remain visible in the game’s main lobby, constantly updating as millions of players fight to unlock the final forms of their favorite Marvel characters.
