Fortnite Fans Clash Over New 3,000 V-Buck Mythic Skins

Epic Games just raised the stakes in Fortnite. The September 2026 Item Shop refresh brought something players have never seen before: “Mythic” rarity character skins. But the shiny new tier comes with a massive catch. They cost 3,000 V-Bucks each, which is roughly $25 in real-world currency. Naturally, the community is split right down the middle. Some see it as a natural evolution of game cosmetics, while others call it an outright cash grab.

What Makes a Mythic Skin?

The debut outfits, named “Eclipse Emperor” and “Nebula Valkyrie,” are undeniably flashy. Unlike older Legendary skins, these Mythic options feature fully reactive armor that shifts colors with every elimination. They also come with a built-in lobby pose, custom physics that alter how clothing sways during a match, and a unique animated back bling. Epic even threw in a matching harvesting tool to sweeten the deal. It is a complete package, but it demands a premium.

Still, for many players, the high-end features do not justify the steep price increase. For years, 2,000 V-Bucks was the soft ceiling for premium skins. Legendary items occasionally went higher in bundles, but a single character rarely demanded this much virtual currency on its own. To get 3,000 V-Bucks, players either have to purchase multiple virtual currency packs or splurge on the expensive $36.99 option. It forces a tough decision for younger fans and budget-conscious gamers alike.

The Backlash on Social Media

Social media erupted almost immediately after the shop rotated. On Reddit’s r/FortniteBR, a thread discussing the Mythic tier quickly gained thousands of comments, with many players accusing Epic Games of corporate greed.

A few common complaints surfaced during the debate:

  • The high price point sets a dangerous precedent for future collaborations.
  • Custom lobby animations should not be locked behind a $25 paywall.
  • Older Legendary skins offered similar quality without the premium price tag.

“This is getting ridiculous,” wrote one player on X. “We used to get high-quality skins for 1,500 V-Bucks. Now they are locking basic features like custom lobby poses behind a new rarity just to charge us more. It feels like we are being squeezed.”

Get Know Instant Access

Another point of contention is how this affects the value of the Fortnite Crew subscription. Subscribers receive 1,000 V-Bucks monthly. Under the old system, saving up for a top-tier skin took two months. Now, players must wait three full months or buy additional coins to afford a single Mythic cosmetic.

Defending the High Price Tag

On the other side of the fence, some players are defending the move. They argue that nobody is forced to buy these cosmetics. They are optional luxury items in a free-to-play game. Several content creators have pointed out the sheer level of detail in the “Eclipse Emperor” design, noting that the cape behaves differently depending on wind speed in-game—a minor technical feat that standard skins lack.

“If you do not like the price, simply do not buy it,” tweeted one popular streamer. “But you cannot deny the work Epic put into these. They feel completely different from anything we have had in the game before. It’s high art for people who want to show off.”

This is not the first time Epic Games has tested the waters with higher price points. Over the past few years, collaborations with luxury fashion brands and complex crossover bundles have slowly nudged average prices upward. However, introducing an official, permanent “Mythic” tier suggests that 3,000 V-Bucks might become the new normal for top-tier releases rather than a one-off exception.

What Happens Next?

Ultimately, sales numbers will decide the future of the Mythic rarity. If the Item Shop remains flooded with these high-priced items, it means players are opening their wallets despite the online outcry. For now, the battle bus is filled with a mix of highly detailed celestial emperors and very angry default skins. Only time will tell if Epic decides to walk back the pricing or double down on its new luxury tier.
