Fortnite to Return to UK iPhones as Epic Bypasses Apple

Fortnite is heading back to British iPhones. After a bitter four-year exile, Epic Games is preparing to relaunch its flagship battle royale game natively on iOS in the United Kingdom. This return is not a peace treaty with Apple. Instead, it is the direct result of aggressive new British legislation designed to break tech giants’ monopolies.

For years, UK players who wanted to play Fortnite on the go had to rely on cloud streaming services. It was a clunky workaround. Soon, they will be able to download the game directly, bypassing Apple’s App Store entirely. Epic plans to launch its own digital marketplace on iOS, using the UK’s newly minted Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers (DMCC) Act to force Apple’s hand.

The Blueprint in Europe

This is not Epic’s first rodeo with legislative workarounds. Earlier this year, the developer successfully launched the Epic Games Store on iOS within the European Union. That move was powered by the EU’s landmark Digital Markets Act (DMA), which legally compelled Apple to allow third-party app stores on its devices.

Now, Epic is using that exact same playbook for the UK. The DMCC Act, which became law in May 2024, gives the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) sweeping powers. The regulator can designate dominant firms—like Apple and Google—as having “Strategic Market Status.” Once labeled, these companies must open up their ecosystems or face staggering fines of up to 10% of their global turnover.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has been highly vocal about his intentions. He confirmed that the company intends to bring both the Epic Games Store and Fortnite back to British iOS users under the new regulatory framework. For Sweeney, this is a personal crusade as much as a business strategy.

A Four-Year Grudge Match

The feud started back in August 2020. Epic introduced a direct payment system inside Fortnite, dodging Apple’s mandatory 30% cut on in-app purchases. Apple reacted swiftly, pulling Fortnite from the App Store. Epic responded with a pre-planned antitrust lawsuit and a viral video mocking Apple’s famous “1984” commercial.

Years of legal battles in US courts followed, yielding mixed results. While Epic failed to prove Apple was an illegal monopolist under US federal law, the tide began to turn globally. Regulators in Brussels, Tokyo, and London started drafting laws to curb the power of mobile gatekeepers.

The upcoming UK launch represents a massive shift. British iPhone users make up a lucrative portion of the gaming market. Offering Fortnite natively means better performance, lower latency, and a much smoother user experience than any cloud-based alternative can offer.

Apple’s Counter-Measures

Do not expect Apple to make things easy. In the EU, Apple complied with the DMA but introduced controversial new fees. The most notorious is the Core Technology Fee (CTF), which charges alternative marketplaces €0.50 per annual install after a certain threshold. Epic has called these fees “malicious compliance” and a blatant attempt to deter developers from leaving the App Store.

It remains to be seen how Apple will structure its terms under the UK’s DMCC Act. The CMA has promised to closely monitor how big tech companies comply with the new rules. If Apple tries to implement a similar fee structure in the UK, it could face immediate scrutiny from British watchdogs eager to prove the new law has teeth.

What Happens Next?

The exact timeline for Fortnite’s UK return depends on when the CMA officially designates Apple with Strategic Market Status and enforces the specific code of conduct. Industry experts expect this process to finalize by late 2024 or early 2025. Once the rules are active, Epic is expected to move fast.

The battle for mobile app distribution is far from over. What started as a dispute over V-Bucks has transformed the global mobile economy. For British gamers, the complex legal warfare boils down to a very simple outcome: they will soon have their favorite game back on their screens, no compromises required.
