Fortnite Down: Epic Investigates Server Issues After Hotfix

Fortnite players booting up their consoles and PCs today were greeted by an unwelcome surprise. Instead of dropping into the Island, thousands found themselves staring at stuck loading screens, bloated login queues, and matchmaking errors that refused to let them queue for a match. The sudden wave of disruptions followed immediately after Epic Games deployed a surprise v36.20 hotfix on Tuesday.

What was meant to be a routine background update quickly spiraled into a widespread outage. Within minutes of the hotfix going live, reports of connectivity issues flooded social media platforms like X and Reddit. Players reported being kicked from active sessions, while others could not even get past the main menu.

Epic Games Acknowledges the Outage

As the complaints piled up, Epic Games was quick to acknowledge the situation. Through its official @FortniteStatus account on X, the developer confirmed that things were not running as intended.

“We are investigating an issue that is preventing players from successfully matchmaking and causing long login queues,” the company stated. “We will provide another update when we have more information.”

The status page for Epic Games Services also shifted to “Degraded Performance” across multiple sectors. This included matchmaking, login services, and even the Epic Games Store itself, which struggled to handle the sudden bottleneck of players trying to re-authenticate their accounts.

What Caused the Matchmaking Meltdown?

The root of the problem seems to lie directly with the v36.20 hotfix. Hotfixes are usually small, seamless updates that Epic pushes to the live servers without requiring a massive, multi-gigabyte download or scheduled downtime. They are typically used to tweak weapon stats, patch exploit vulnerabilities, or prep the map for upcoming in-game events.

However, something went wrong during this deployment. While Epic has not detailed the exact technical glitch, network analysts suggest a database desync between the updated server clusters and the player client version. This mismatch essentially means the game client and the matchmaking servers are speaking different languages, causing the system to reject matchmaking requests to prevent deeper database corruption.

The Impact on Players

For the average player, the experience has been incredibly frustrating. The issues are not localized to just one platform either. Whether you are playing on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, PC, or mobile, the errors remain the same.

Here is what players are currently encountering:

  • Endless Login Queues: Some players report timer screens telling them to wait anywhere from ten minutes to over an hour just to reach the lobby.
  • Matchmaking Failures: For those lucky enough to get past the title screen, selecting any game mode—including Battle Royale, Zero Build, LEGO Fortnite, or Rocket Racing—results in an error message. The most common error reads: “Successfully turned off matchmaking.”
  • Friend List Disappearances: Social features have also taken a hit, with players reporting that their friends lists appear empty or completely offline.

Disrupted Tournaments and Daily Grinds

The timing of the outage has also caused some headaches for competitive players. Several regional tournaments and daily cups were scheduled to take place around the time the hotfix rolled out. With matchmaking completely offline, Epic has had to postpone or cancel several of these competitive lobbies. Casual players hoping to squeeze in their daily challenges or progress their Battle Pass before the end of the season are also left out in the cold.

When Will Fortnite Servers Be Back Up?

Epic Games has a solid track record of resolving these hotfix-induced issues relatively quickly. Typically, when a minor update breaks matchmaking, the developers will either roll back the server-side changes or deploy a rapid client-side patch to align the versions.

However, because this outage has affected core login infrastructure, the recovery process might take a bit longer than a simple reboot. Epic’s engineering teams are likely working to isolate the corrupted server nodes and restore stable connections.

If you are trying to play right now, your best bet is to monitor the official Fortnite Status social media pages or the Epic Games Status website. It is generally recommended not to close and restart your game repeatedly if you are already in a login queue, as doing so will put you back at the end of the line.

For now, the battle bus remains parked. We will update this story as soon as Epic Games deploys a fix or provides a timeline for when players can expect the servers to return to full health.
