Fortnite players need to find something else to do this morning. Epic Games has officially pulled the plug on the matchmaking servers for a massive, scheduled update. Today is October 1, 2026, and it marks the deployment of patch v36.10.
This is not just a routine weekly patch. Epic warned the community ahead of time that this specific maintenance window will last much longer than usual. If you planned to squeeze in a few battle royale matches before school or work, you are out of luck today. The servers are going dark, and they will stay down for hours.
When Do the Fortnite Servers Go Offline?
The maintenance process starts early. Epic Games announced that matchmaking services will be disabled starting at 3:30 AM Eastern Time (7:30 AM UTC). If you are in the middle of a tense match at that exact time, you will be booted straight back to the main menu. There are no exceptions.
Exactly thirty minutes later, at 4:00 AM Eastern Time (8:00 AM UTC), the game servers will shut down completely. This is when the real backend work begins. Epic’s engineering team will take the database offline to apply the heavy v36.10 patch files.
Key Times to Remember
- 3:30 AM ET: Matchmaking is disabled.
- 4:00 AM ET: Fortnite servers go fully offline.
- TBD: Servers return to service (expected to take up to 4 or 5 hours).
Normally, standard maintenance takes around two hours. However, because of the sheer scale of the v36.10 build, the developer is urging patience. The servers could easily remain offline until 8:00 AM or 9:00 AM Eastern Time, depending on how smoothly the server-side deployment goes.
Why Is This Update So Big?
The calendar tells the story. It is October 1. For Fortnite fans, that means one thing above all else: Fortnitemares. The annual Halloween event is always one of the biggest, most resource-heavy updates of the year, requiring huge map overhauls and entirely new gameplay mechanics.
Epic uses transitional patches like v36.10 to preload high-resolution assets, spooky ambient sounds, and decorative map changes. We are talking about haunted points of interest, zombie spawning mechanics, and a fresh batch of collaborative skins. Industry leakers have already pointed to potential crossovers with iconic horror movie franchises, though Epic has kept the finest details under lock and key.
But the update is not just about spooky cosmetics. Rumors have circulated in the competitive community that Epic is fixing physics engine bugs that have plagued the current season. These deep-code adjustments require extensive server testing before players can safely log back in.
How to Prep Your Console or PC
The actual file size for update v36.10 is expected to be hefty. Whether you play on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, or mobile, you will want to get the download started as soon as the patch goes live on the platform networks.
You do not need to panic if you see a “Server Offline” error loop on your screen. The actual client-side patch usually becomes available to download about an hour after the servers go dark. Once you install the files, you still will not be able to enter lobby matchmaking, but you will be ready to drop from the Battle Bus the second Epic turns the master switch back on. Grab your squad, queue up your downloads, and get ready for a scary good season.
