Fortnitemares 2026 Launches Stranger Things 5 Crossover
A Nightmare Returns to the Island
Spooky season is officially here. Epic Games has launched Fortnitemares 2026, and it might be the biggest autumn update the battle royale has seen in years. This year’s event leans heavily into high-stakes horror. The big draw is a massive, long-awaited collaboration with Netflix to celebrate the final season of Stranger Things. It is a perfect fit for the annual October event, bringing a dark, tense atmosphere to the island that players have not felt in a long time.
But this update is more than just a couple of character outfits in the shop. It is a full-scale invasion of the game world.
Entering the Upside Down
The collaboration brings the dread of Hawkins right into the battle royale matches. Massive rifts have torn open across the map. These portals lead to localized pockets of the Upside Down, where the sky turns a dusty red and ash floats through the air. Venture inside, and you will find high-tier loot. You will also find danger. Creepy vines crawl up the walls of familiar buildings, and the distant shriek of a Demogorgon is never far away.
For players who want to look the part, the item shop has received a major overhaul. A battle-worn Eleven skin, reflecting her appearance in the upcoming fifth season, is the headliner. Alongside her is the terrifying mastermind Vecna, complete with a built-in emote that recreates his bone-chilling levitation. Fans of the classic show can also grab updated versions of beloved characters, complete with new style options that reflect the passage of time in the Netflix series.
A Brand-New Way to Survive
The real highlight for cooperative players is the introduction of an entirely new PvE mode. Titled ‘The Upside Down Incursion,’ this horde survival mode tasks squads of four with holding the line against waves of monsters. It takes the classic Horde Rush formula and turns the tension up. Players must build defenses, manage scarce ammunition, and survive in pitch-black conditions. New enemy types make their debut here, including fast-moving Demodogs that can leap over high walls and jump directly onto players.

To make things even tougher, the mode introduces a toxic spore mechanic. If you stay outside of designated safe zones for too long, your health will slowly tick away. Players have to scavenge for glowing spores to create temporary immunities, forcing teams to constantly split up and take massive risks.
“We wanted to create something that felt genuinely scary,” one of the developers noted in an early preview. “It’s not just about shooting monsters anymore. You have to think about positioning, resources, and your team’s survival.”
Classic Weapons and Spooky Treats
Of course, it would not be Fortnitemares without some wacky weapons. The Pumpkin Launcher is back, firing explosive jack-o’-lanterns that destroy enemy builds with satisfying thuds. The Wood Stake Shotgun also returns, offering high damage against both monsters and rival players. For movement, players can once again hunt down Witch Brooms to glide across the map and escape tight situations quickly.
Epic Games has also introduced a series of free challenges. By participating in both the battle royale matches and the new horde mode, players can earn exclusive cosmetic rewards without spending any V-Bucks. These include a rusted swing-set back bling, a creepy grandfather clock pickaxe, and a weapon wrap that bleeds dark particles whenever you secure an elimination.
How to Join the Event
The update is live right now across all platforms, including consoles, PC, and mobile devices. Players will need to download the latest patch to jump into the action. According to Epic, the Fortnitemares festivities are scheduled to run until November 3rd, giving players just under three weeks to complete all their challenges and experience the crossover before the rifts close for good.
