FTC Warns Coin Master Gamers of Free Spin Phishing Scams

Federal Regulators Warn Mobile Gamers to Guard Their Accounts

Federal regulators are sounding the alarm for mobile gamers. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued a fresh warning this week targeting players of the smash-hit mobile game Coin Master. Bad actors are dangling fake “free spins” to hijack player accounts, and the threat is growing fast.

The timing is no accident. Moon Active, the developer behind the game, has lined up a series of massive, highly anticipated in-game events for October 2026. Players are desperate to stockpile resources. Scammers know this. They are exploiting the pre-event hype to trick eager users into giving up their personal login details.

How the Free Spin Trap Works

Coin Master is a massive global phenomenon. The gameplay revolves around spinning a virtual slot machine to win coins, attack rival players’ bases, and build up your own village. Spins are the ultimate currency. Because players get a limited number of free spins every hour, the demand for more is incredibly high. If you want to keep playing without waiting, you usually have to open your wallet.

That is where the scammers swoop in. The FTC reports that phishing links are spreading rapidly across social media platforms. You can find them on Facebook, Reddit, TikTok, and Discord. The posts look incredibly enticing. They promise hundreds, sometimes thousands, of free spins with no strings attached.

Many of these links look highly convincing. Some even copy the game’s distinct cartoon art style and color scheme to appear official. But when a player clicks the link, they are redirected to a fraudulent, third-party website. The site prompts them to log in to claim their prize.

Because Coin Master heavily integrates with Facebook to let friends play together, these fake portals usually ask for Facebook credentials. The moment a player types in their username and password, the scammers steal them. Within minutes, the victim is locked out of their own profile.

The Real-World Cost of a Hijacked Account

Losing access to a virtual village is painful, but the financial risks run much deeper. “Scammers are not just looking to steal your virtual shields and gold,” says cyber security analyst Marcus Vance. “Many players link their credit cards, debit cards, or PayPal accounts to their Google Play or Apple App Store accounts to make quick in-game purchases. Once a hacker gets into a linked device or social profile, they can run up hundreds of dollars in unauthorized charges before the victim even notices.”

There is also a thriving black market for high-level gaming accounts. Hackers frequently hijack well-developed Coin Master profiles, strip them of valuable card collections, and sell the gutted accounts to unsuspecting buyers online.

According to the FTC, reports of gaming-related phishing attempts have spiked by over 35% in the last quarter alone. The agency expects this number to climb even higher as the October 2026 events draw closer.

How to Protect Your Account

You do not have to stop playing to stay safe. The FTC has shared several straightforward tips to help players protect their accounts and personal data:

  • Never trust third-party links: If an offer for free spins sounds too good to be true, it is. Genuine giveaways do not require you to input your password on external websites.
  • Stick to official channels: Moon Active does share legitimate daily reward links. However, they only post them on verified social media pages, such as their official Facebook page with the blue checkmark.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA): Make sure 2FA is active on your Facebook account and your mobile app store. This adds an extra layer of security, making it much harder for hackers to log in even if they manage to steal your password.
  • Do not share login details: Never give your password, email, or verification codes to anyone claiming to be a customer service representative. Official support staff will never ask for your password.

If you or someone you know has already fallen victim to one of these phishing scams, the FTC urges you to act quickly. Try to reset your password immediately. If you are locked out, contact Facebook support and Moon Active helper portals right away. You can also file a formal complaint with the government at ReportFraud.ftc.gov to help regulators track and shut down these malicious operations before the October events kick off.
