Fortnite Launches Open Beta for Massive Disney Expansion
Fortnite is no longer just a battle royale. It is evolving into a massive, persistent digital amusement park.
Today, Epic Games opened the floodgates to its highly anticipated Disney Universe expansion, launching an open beta that brings some of the world’s biggest entertainment franchises directly into the game. This marks the first major milestone of Disney’s massive $1.5 billion investment in Epic Games, which was announced last year.
This is not just another limited-time crossover event with a few character skins. It is a permanent, living ecosystem built inside Fortnite’s launcher. Players can now log in and explore massive, dedicated hubs centered around Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar, and classic Disney animation.
A Sandbox of Galaxies and Heroes
The beta’s main draw is the high level of player customization. Instead of just visiting pre-made worlds, players get their own customizable Home Spaces within these iconic universes.
If you are a Star Wars fan, you can claim a chunk of a dusty outer-rim planet or set up your own hangar inside a Star Destroyer. Marvel fans can build their own high-tech Stark-style workshops or mystical sanctums. These spaces persist across sessions. Whatever you build, place, or decorate remains exactly how you left it when you log back in.
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney expressed his excitement about the launch, noting that the goal is to give players a place to actually live inside these stories, rather than just play through them. He framed the release as a major step toward an open, interconnected digital world.
The partnership leverages Epic’s powerful Unreal Engine 5, resulting in highly detailed environments that look distinct from Fortnite’s traditional cartoonish art style. The Marvel zones sport sleek, metallic surfaces and holographic displays. Meanwhile, the Star Wars areas feature the gritty, lived-in aesthetic made famous by the films.

How the Persistent Progression Works
The expansion introduces a new unified progression system. As players complete challenges, play mini-games, and explore the Disney hubs, they earn Cosmic Sparks. This new currency is used exclusively to unlock furniture, decorations, and interactive props for their personal spaces.
Crucially, Epic has confirmed that existing Fortnite cosmetics are fully compatible. If you already own the Darth Vader or Spider-Man skins from previous battle passes, you can use them here. You can also showcase your digital collectibles on display pedestals inside your personal hubs for friends to see when they visit.
The social aspect is a massive focus for this release. Up to 16 players can hang out in a single private space at once. Players can host virtual gatherings, play retro-inspired arcade games, or jump straight into custom Unreal Editor for Fortnite maps created by other users directly from portals inside the Disney hub.
Disney’s Billion-Dollar Bet
For Disney, this open beta is the first real test of a very expensive gamble. Disney CEO Bob Iger previously described the partnership with Epic Games as the company’s biggest entry ever into the world of games.
By embedding its characters deeply into Fortnite’s infrastructure, Disney is targeting a younger generation of fans who spend more time in virtual worlds than they do watching traditional television. It is a long-term play to keep brands like Marvel and Star Wars relevant for decades to come.
So far, the community’s reaction to the beta has been largely positive, though some technical hiccups have emerged. Servers experienced heavy queues during the first few hours of the launch, and some players reported minor glitches when placing complex assets in their custom spaces. Epic has already pushed out a hotfix to address the most urgent stability issues.
How to Join the Beta
The Disney Universe open beta is free to play and available to everyone who has Fortnite installed on their PC, console, or mobile device. A special playlist tile has been added to the main Fortnite lobby, allowing players to jump straight into the new experience with a single click.
There is no word yet on how long the beta phase will last, but Epic plans to roll out regular content updates throughout the coming months. Fans can expect a massive influx of Pixar-themed content, including Toy Story and Monsters Inc. items, later this summer.
