Fortnite is about to look very different. Epic Games has finally shared concrete details about its massive collaboration with Disney, officially named "Disney Horizon." Set to debut alongside the launch of Fortnite Chapter 7, this expansion aims to blend Disney’s classic storytelling with the battle royale’s chaotic sandbox.
This isn’t just another set of character skins. Instead, players are getting a persistent virtual universe built right into the game. It is the first major fruit of Disney’s $1.5 billion investment in Epic, which was announced early last year.
A Theme Park That Never Closes
At the center of Disney Horizon is a series of persistent virtual theme parks. Unlike previous limited-time events, these digital spaces will remain online permanently. Players can log in to explore meticulously recreated lands inspired by real-world Disney parks, complete with interactive rides, shops, and secret areas.
"We want people to feel like they are walking through the gates of Anaheim or Orlando, even if they are playing on a phone or console," said Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney. "But because it’s Fortnite, the rules of physics don’t always have to apply."
The virtual parks will feature social hubs where users can hang out, watch live-streamed Disney events, and buy exclusive virtual merchandise. Epic plans to update these spaces seasonally, matching real-world theme park celebrations like Halloween and Christmas.
Pixar Takes the Spotlight in Chapter 7
While classic Disney characters will definitely make an appearance, Pixar is taking center stage for the initial gameplay rollout. Chapter 7 will introduce several dedicated Pixar-themed zones and gameplay mechanics.
For example, players can visit a custom-built "Toy Story" sandbox. In this zone, everyone is shrunk down to the size of an action figure. The environment turns everyday household objects into giant obstacles, creating a fresh tactical playground for combat and building. There is also talk of an "Incredibles" superpower system, allowing players to equip unique heroic abilities in special game modes.
Racing fans will get something too. Epic is integrating elements from "Cars" into its Rocket Racing sub-game. This includes iconic tracks from Radiator Springs and customizable vehicular cosmetic items that let players drive as their favorite characters.
Under the Hood: Unreal Engine 5 Power
Building a persistent world of this scale requires some serious horsepower. Epic is leveraging the latest features of Unreal Engine 5 to make the transition between the standard Fortnite island and the Disney Horizon hubs seamless. The company promises that matchmaking and loading screens will be almost nonexistent.
This technology also allows for high-fidelity physics and lighting. Water rides will have realistic splash effects, and night-time fireworks shows will illuminate the virtual sky in real-time, casting accurate shadows across the park landscapes.
How It Affects the Main Battle Royale
Will this split the player base? Epic says no. The main battle royale mode will remain intact, but Disney Horizon will exist as an interconnected parallel universe. Players can jump between the competitive battle royale map and the Disney social spaces with a single click. Cosmetics will also carry over. If you unlock a Pixar-themed outfit or glider in the Disney Horizon world, you can wear it while hunting down opponents in standard Fortnite matches.
For Disney, this is a long-term play to capture younger audiences who spend more time in digital spaces than in front of traditional television screens. "This is the next generation of Disney fandom," says Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences. "It’s a place where you don’t just watch our stories—you live in them."
Fortnite Chapter 7, along with the first phase of Disney Horizon, is expected to roll out late next year. Epic plans to share more details, including a full character roster, in the coming months.
