Fortnite Set to Return to iOS in UK and Japan in 2026
A Long-Awaited Return to iOS
Fortnite is finally coming back to iPhones in the United Kingdom and Japan. Epic Games confirmed that the hit battle royale will launch on iOS in both countries in 2026. This move is a direct result of new pro-competition laws designed to break Apple’s absolute control over iOS app distribution. For millions of mobile gamers in these countries, it ends a years-long lockout.
The Fight for Open Platforms
The conflict dates back to 2020. That was when Epic tried to bypass Apple’s steep 30% payment fees, leading Apple to pull Fortnite from its store entirely. Ever since, Epic has fought a relentless legal and lobbying campaign across the globe to force mobile ecosystems open.
The tide is starting to turn. In the European Union, the Digital Markets Act forced Apple’s hand, allowing Epic to launch its store there last year. Now, the UK and Japan are following suit with their own regulations. The UK’s Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act and Japan’s Smartphone Software Competition Act will both be fully active by 2026. Both laws require Apple to permit rival marketplaces on its devices.
‘We are going to bring our games to players everywhere we possibly can,’ Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said in a recent statement on the matter. He praised the new legislation, calling it a vital step toward a fairer digital market. Sweeney has long argued that no single tech giant should control what software consumers can run on devices they own.
Free Cosmetics to Celebrate
To welcome players back, Epic is preparing some exclusive perks. Anyone who downloads Fortnite on iOS in the newly supported regions will get special, mobile-only in-game rewards. While Epic has not revealed the exact designs yet, they are expected to be similar to the previous European launch, which featured the highly sought-after ‘Katalina’ outfit. Players can expect:

- An exclusive character skin
- A matching pickaxe tool
- A rare weapon wrap
- A unique back bling accessory
These freebies are designed to jumpstart the mobile player base. Epic knows that getting users to download a third-party app store takes effort. Offering shiny, exclusive cosmetics is a proven way to get gamers past that initial setup hurdle.
The Installation Process
Installing the game will require a few extra steps. Instead of searching the standard App Store, players will need to visit Epic’s official website using Safari or Chrome on their iPhones. From there, they will download the Epic Games Store app directly.
Apple has previously warned that third-party stores could pose security risks. Epic, however, insists its platform is completely safe. The installation process involves clicking through several iOS security prompts, a barrier Epic has frequently criticized as an intentional attempt to scare off users. Once the store is installed, updating and playing Fortnite will feel identical to the experience on PC or console.
Looking Ahead
The 2026 launch represents a massive shift in the mobile ecosystem. What started as a regional policy debate in Europe is rapidly becoming a global standard. It has been a costly war for Epic, which lost hundreds of millions of dollars in potential revenue during its absence from iOS. However, company leadership remains confident that a truly competitive mobile market will pay off in the long run.
Other countries are watching closely. If the launches in the UK and Japan go well, governments in other parts of the world, including the United States, might face increased pressure to pass similar legislation. For now, gamers in London and Tokyo can start counting down the months until they can jump back into the Battle Bus right from their phones.
