Fortnite Battle Pass Skins Hit Item Shop, Triggering Price Backlash

Fortnite has officially entered a new era, and not everyone is thrilled about the price of admission. For years, one rule kept the game’s community locked in a cycle of urgent play: strict exclusivity. If you missed a Battle Pass, those skins were gone forever. That changed when Epic Games rewritten its own playbook, announcing that items from Chapter 5 Season 4 onwards could eventually transition to the regular Item Shop.

Now, those items are starting to make their debut. But as players look at the price tags in the shop, the initial excitement is rapidly souring. The math simply does not favor latecomers.

The Huge Price Disparity

To put the controversy in perspective, a standard Fortnite Battle Pass costs 950 V-Bucks, which is roughly nine dollars. For that single purchase, players get access to over a hundred cosmetic rewards. This includes multiple character skins, back blings, gliders, wraps, and even enough bonus V-Bucks to purchase the next season’s pass for free. It is, by far, the best value in the game.

But if you buy those same items individually in the Item Shop under the new system? The pricing skyrockets. A single character skin can easily command 1,200 to 1,500 V-Bucks, with some premium crossover options going even higher. Gliders and pickaxes often go for 800 to 1,200 V-Bucks each.

This means buying just one complete set for a single character can cost double or triple the price of the entire original Battle Pass. For players who missed out on the Marvel-themed Chapter 5 Season 4, the realization of what it will cost to catch up is a tough pill to swallow.

Community Divided Over FOMO and Fees

On platforms like X and Reddit, the Fortnite community is deeply divided. On one hand, collectors are glad the “fear of missing out”—commonly known as FOMO—is finally losing its grip on the game. Players who took a break from the game or started playing late now have a second chance to grab skins they love. No one is locked out permanently just because they were busy with real life.

On the other hand, the sticker shock is very real. “It is great that the skins are back, but the markup is insane,” one player shared on Reddit. “You are essentially penalized for not playing during that specific window by having to pay ten times more for a fraction of the content.”

Epic Games’ Balancing Act

Epic Games is playing a very deliberate strategy here. By keeping the active Battle Pass incredibly cheap and the Item Shop prices high, the developer ensures that players still have a massive incentive to log in and grind during the active season. The Battle Pass remains a steal that rewards active engagement.

Meanwhile, the Item Shop serves as a premium safety net. It is a monetization strategy designed to maximize profit from late arrivals without alienating the core audience who put in the hours to level up. Still, the sheer volume of complaints shows that players are feeling the pinch. Many feel that while bringing these items back is a positive step for preservation, the premium pricing feels a bit too greedy.

As Fortnite continues to evolve from a simple battle royale into a massive, multi-game platform, digital assets are becoming more valuable than ever. Epic’s shift away from hard exclusivity is a sign of the times. But as this first wave of cosmetics proves, nostalgia in Fortnite comes with a very steep price tag.
